September 30, 201510 yr Got the first batch of Edge Grain Cutting Boards and Cheese Boards for Christmas ready for final sanding. I took some time off from doing cutting boards the past year or two as I got burned out with them and had some medical issues that took me out of the shop. So this year I am starting back up with some changes to my old designs by dropping the End Grain boards I had been doing and going strictly with Edge Grain boards due to the cost of lumber here in So.Calif. and the cost vs. profit as well as taking less time to make. I talked with John Moody about his edge grain cutting board designs and have made some changes to be more like his which are more contemporary with a greater appeal to customers. We also talked about some of the marketing techniques he and Beth have worked out which have increased their sales. So it has been nice to get out in the shop and enjoy the woodworking again as opposed to just pushing things through to get it over with. Since my wife is a teacher I sell a lot of my stuff at her school as teachers LOVE hand made things and since their schedules are so busy, especially leading up to Christmas, having the gifts come to them as opposed to going to the Mall makes their lives easier.
September 30, 201510 yr Those are beauties! That grain is going to pop when the oil hits them.I agree about the time/cost of edge grain vs. end grain.
September 30, 201510 yr Allen, is that mostly cherry, maple, and walnut in those boards? Look nice, BTW, (even though you know that).
October 2, 201510 yr Can I hire you to make them for me? Just kidding those do look mighty fine though.
