Children's Rocking Chairs Completed (Pics in Progress)

Featured Replies

I wrapped up making 5 children's rocking chairs today. They are made from 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood and there are 6 pieces to each chair that interlock together like a puzzle. They are not difficult to make, but they are time consuming as I have to rough cut the pieces, then flush trim the pieces on the router table to the templates, then round over all the edges on the router table, and then sand and prime them. I always like to make the chairs first when heading into the Christmas season so that I can get them out of the way and then move on to other projects. I will only prime the chairs and not paint them to the customer's desire. Way too much time and effort on my end and some people want some wild stuff.

So here is the project from start to finish.

Templates traced out on 2  5'x5' sheets of 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood. Each sheet will yield 2 full chairs plus an extra back and seat piece as well as some extra front stretchers and locking keys. I had 2 side pieces left over from my last run so I was able to make 5 chairs instead of 4 which was good.

Pieces rough cut using jig saw and band saw. This is the most time consuming part.

Chairs completed, primed and ready for sale. I already have 2 of them sold and will deliver them this week, so the other 3 are up for grabs.

Here are photos of 2 chairs that I did paint a few years back as they were for a charity donation for our local Christian Crisis Pregnancy Center fund raiser.

Well done Allen.....Well done!

that's really nice.

That's really cool! Did you design that layout (?), looks very well planned.

I got the orginal paper templates a number of years ago from another woodworker online. It was originally smaller more like a large doll rocker and it had a bit different design which was more traditional.  After making the first chair I redesigned it to make it larger as well as making it a more contemporary design. The notches where the parts interlock are the same as the original. I did change the key design that locks all the pieces together in the back as the original design had the key as a tapered rod that came down to a point which looked like a dagger which is not real safe.

I love those and you do a great job on them. The paint scheme is awesome and really brings them out.
