July 30, 201510 yr Let's start with the "Good" part. Set up the saw bench on the back porch. Needed to rip some parts for the door. Even had some help! Meet Mr. Campy, the Shop Cat. The saw is a 6" Skil Home Shop saw. Hey, at least it IS a vintage one. Marked out a few saw lines, needed to make some stiles and rails. Shop cat does not like saws! Notice under the bench? First pull of the trigger, all i saw was a gray & white blur. Cuts weren't too bad, grain was trying to fight a bit. Needed a bunch of cuts made.. Some of the wider ones were kind of knotty. Still had a decent plank left. And, after I put away the "saw mill" stuff, it was time to TRY to build a door... Door parts. Things weren't going all that great. Both the backsaw and the bandsaw were following their own lines, not always the lines I drew out. The stiles were clamped in place to keep them in some sort of order. Those rails sitting up on top? Sharp chisels vs squirrely grain...came out a draw. The stiles were chopped to match for a slip fit....NOT. As for that thin panel? This was to be a raised panel...measured thing four times, kept coming up too long. Then had to re-raise the end I trimmed back. Width? Maybe I should have done a glue up? Board this came from was with in 1/4" of being wide enough...or so I thought And the UGLY part of the title. Beginning to hate bridel joints. hard to cut, hate to keep square, hard to measure correctly. Parts never seem to go together right I MIGHT try to save this....thing. If I can't? I'll make another, but more like the sides. Still have that long plank of 7/8" oak handy....Shop cat is currently napping ON my leg as I type this, needs to recover from that "Bad,old saw".... The good? The Bad? and the very ugly....Might play that theme song when I go back to the shop...
July 30, 201510 yr I've never done a bridle joint. If you decide to make another maybe consider a half lap.
July 30, 201510 yr Author I actually considered a half-lap......the grooves for the raised panel kept getting in the way of a layout....Bridle joint was also used on the feet under the doorway. They turned out a bit better... News Flash: have "Fixed" the door. Squared up the sides, high spots are now flushed down flat. Plugs of Oak were made, and installed. Then pared flat, and sanded smooth. Router has been set up. Beading bit has been run around on the bottoms, and the outside corners. Cleats for the floor are in. Corner blocks are all installed. IF I get back down there ( after all the flying things have settled down) I will take the camera along. Need to cut the floor parts. Then maybe I can get the top done? maybe a day or so before the finishing stuff arrives on the scene.... Dang...I got router chips in my beard and hair....and my shirt pocket. Messy jobs today.
July 30, 201510 yr After turning and/or running the router, I also end up with chips in everything- some of the cracks and crevices we can't even mention here!
