July 27, 201510 yr Some of the raised panels are ready for "prime time"! Shop is a crowded mess, where do I set things up to clamp a side panel? Well, how about taking the Mortise jig, screw it down to the end of the bench. Add a couple blocks on the ends of the jig? Place one stile into the jig. Glue three rails into the stile? Slide two raised panels into place, and add the other stile? Something like this, with two clamps? Note to self: make sure you can see which face is the outside one, BEFORE sliding raised panels in....Might leave it alone. Will need some extra clean up. Couple defects in the stiles I was trying to hide. One clamp on each face, evens the pressure a bit. Otherwise, the panel would be bent away from the clamps. Went on a road trip, to allow the glue to cure out. Back from the road trip. Take the panel out of the clamps, and set it aside. We have work to do. Have two more panels to raise, first. While I did use the smaller smooth plane on the end grain of the two panels, these long sides needed a bit longer plane, to make things go a bit quicker... An 18" LONG Stanley No.6c Type 10. The one I traded two junker planes for. It made some decent shavings. Found out that a squiggle of candle wax along the sole will speed things up....big time! Slick as can be, just glides along as fast as you can hold on.... Got the two panels raised, might as well glue the other side up. This time, I made certain which was the inside face, as I was gluing parts up. Same set up, I guess this is now a "Glueing Bench"? Shop light likes to put a glare to things. Added an extra clamp, since the top and bottom rails needed to be pulled together. This side has a knot in each panel. Place the "bad side" of the knots to the inside on the case. Will allow this one to dry overnight. Might try to get the end panel done later. Going to need help getting the completed end table up and up of the Dungeon Shop.....
July 27, 201510 yr I end up putting masking tape flags on the "outside surfaces" to help me remember which direction things should go.
