A basic First tool kit?

Featured Replies

Posed this on a couple of other places..

Ok, imagine that you are just starting out, and want to start woodworking, maybe as a hobby.    Budget is very limited.  You have no idea which tools to buy to get started. What sort of "list" would show what you need to start up with?   Just the basic tool set.   Some power tools MIGHT be added, if budget allows.   Just to fill a common tool box that would be in the garage.

Type of tool, and why?

Have fun....

When I started out, I had hand-me-downs from my father and grandfather so I didn't have a lot of choices. A hammer, hand saw, framing square, an old folder ruler and a brace and bit set. Those were enough because I was working with a carpenter building houses.

Starting with those, these could be some of the more useful stuff to add-

Combination Square

Bevel Square

Egg Beater Hand drill

A 4-in-1 screw driver

A set of twist bits

Nail sets

Stanley FatMax measuring tape.

Swanson Speed square

Utility knife with Irwin blades

Extending magnet

Flashlight

A whole $h!t load of pencils

I have been asked on another site about the "backstory" to this sort of post....

In this area, not only do we have a few disabled Veterans, we have young adults with learning troubles.  I thought i could gather an inexpensive set of woodworking tools, make a case for them, and donate to whichever group might have a need for this.   Maybe get a few interested in out craft enough to want to learn more about it.

Yes, I said "DONATE"   no auction to raise funds for me.   No money for me at all.  The tools are mainly "extras" that I have.   Maybe make a carry case for them.   make someone's day a little better.

Now, IF others were to do the same thing in their own areas, maybe we can start something good for people?

I bought one item a week using my paper route money.  Hammer, Framing Square, Screwdrivers - straight and phillips.  Slip  joint pliers..  Straight chisels.  Adjustable wrench (monkey wrench style - not crescent wrench style looks like an "F"). Folding Rule.  Tape Measure.  coping saw.  carpenters saw.  Egg beater hand drill.  Drill bits.  Ratchet brace-and-bit (put it on layaway and paid some each week  for a while).  Bits for the brace -and -bit.  Millers Falls Plane (also bought on layaway plan). Vise. Combination square.   Then on to the power tools: Sunbeam Drillmaster 1/4" drill motor.  Skill Saw.  Dunlop 12" 3-wheel Band Saw.  Craftsman Lathe (Dunlop had bronze headstock bearings - Craftsman had ball bearings. Craftsman also had an available bed extension). Lathe Chisels.  Lathe tooling (bed extension, drill chuck, 4-jaw chuck, Work arbors  screw center, outboard faceplate. Sanding disk, L-shaped tool rest)  weird Drill Press that used a 1/2" drill motor  which could be removed from the drill press and used as a hand held drill motor.  I wanted a shop in the basement and I paid for it myself.  Sort of trying to prove to my Father that I could have a hobby that I paid for and he didn't have to .

Ok, tool box was delivered today.   RTC IND. of Logan County, OH.   They serve people with disabilities through out the county, regardless of age.   The gal behing the counter when I walked in RAN out to meet me!  I had called ahead to make sure they'd take it.    Couple photos of what went out there today.

About full?  well, there was a lift out tray, as well.    And this is almost all that landed in the tray.

There was also a 12" F style clamp to lay on the tray.   I have the entire table of contends, IF anyone wants to read through it.   Lots of tools in one place..   There is even a #3 sized plane, and a block plane in the bottom of the black plastic tool box.  Chose that so the box would last longer.   There is a way to pad lock the box as well.   Just in case....

They said they will be sending me a nice THANK YOU note in the mail.....this entire box was a donation nothing more...

So, anyone want a list?   It is a LONG one....

a JAPANESE SAW,

BRACE AND A SET OF BRAD POINT BITS

SCROLL SAW

UTILITY KNIFE

COMPASS WITH PENCIL

CARPENTER AND REGULAR PENCILS,
