Woodworking and rabbits

Featured Replies

OK, maybe this isn't so much woodworking as you normally see. Its those darn rabbits. They are everywhere here. They are so used to being around people that you can walk right up to them. Now for the wood working part. All the homes here have 5 foot fences made of cedar around the back yard. Those critters can squeeze thru an opening 2 inches or less under a gate. Then they eat up my garden and my wife's flowers. I went to every opening, crack, etc and made a cedar board to fit and plug all cracks. So far, so good. Then I find out that my next door neighbor loves rabbits and has a several families under her deck, even feeds them.....................OH my.

Oh yes, I forgot those squirrels, I won't reveal his identity, but one of my friends live traps them and got nearly 60 last year.   Yes 60. WOW. Those critters eat my tomatoes. Oh shoot.

Last few years the coyote population has increased and even Foxes have been in my back yard. By the way they can jump a 5' fence like it is no bother and can land on top like a trapeze artist

I think i will get my tomatoes at the local farmer's market and start a new back yard hobby. Something like the fairy garden, like the pictures I have been posting lately. Except I may call it a tribute to dead critters and it will be made of WOOD.

If ya can't beat 'em......

...eat 'em!!

I've been able to keep the rabbits out of the garden with a short wall topped with wire screen (1/2 " x 1/2" openings). I've given up on the squirrels.

I'm hunting Wabbitts......

I know this not related to rabbits, but our friend mixes ground up oyster shells in the soil for her vegetable garden and the gophers stopped entering the area from under ground. Seem the critters don't like the shells, feels like cut glass when they are burrowing, it slices up their little burrowing paws.

We used to have an Old English Sheep dog, and i would completely clip his hair (or fur, whichever) off the first week of June every year. I'd take that hair and put clumps of it all over the garden and it seemed to kleep everything away (including the deer). We lived in the woods, so had lots of critters trying to help themselves. You can try a local dog groomer and see if they give you a bag, mine will. I had to go begging for it after out Sheepdog died. One thing: those indoor perfumed dogs don't seem to have the right odor...I tried a bag from our daughter's dog (which fit my earlier description) and it didn't work worth a hoot. It does not keep the birds out of the strawberries, that takes netting.

We have a very well fed squirrel that comes around each summer and eats my nectarines. In the five years I've had the tree I've yet to have one piece of fruit. In the if you can't beat em spirit I'm now disabled and sit on the patio and watch him eat them. He's so fat the he's not very graceful when in the tree. You can mark his progress by the violent shaking of the branches.

Was just thinking of Elmer Fudd hunting the rascally rabbit.
