My first walking cane

Featured Replies

I don't really need a cane, buy it is nice to have along when climbing the stadium steps at my grandson's soccer games where there are no handrails.  So I came up with this design. I made it of Oak and the shaft is textured and swirled. The handle is Oak, Maple and Coco Bolo with a celtic knot. I did research on the web and cut it for my height. I like it and will use it

An awesome stick, Ron.

Great work, love the knot .

Pretty cool Ron, one question, how did you get the shaft tapered like that? Or is it a figment of my imagination.

Its not tapered, just the camera angle or shadow.

Awesome Job Ron. Very nice looking.

I just don't like the color. I'm going to change it. It needs to be darker.

So what's next Ron, stain? Or a new one!

Very nice but next time put the cane shaft in the middle of the handle for more support and strength.

That handle may snap at the joint if full weight is applied to the back of the handle.

Actually, the position is quite common for a cane-

These are examples from a custom cane maker. Almost all of here canes use the offset shaft.

Mike, I considered that when I made it. I know that the joint is a major weak place. I made it with the intent to use it as a support when I rise only. My meds cause a 10 second buzz sometimes on rising. This was not an issue until recently. I was at a soccer game sitting on bleacher seats where there was no handrails. As i got up I realized that it be practical and safer if I took a support along. Being a woodworker, I just had to make my own.

I don't plan to make another one, so I am working on refinishing this one to a darker color.I'll post a picture when done. It is looking better all ready

yes need to move handle forward some, that way it is stronger and more sturder, lol I should know been walking w/a cane for awhile now, since i do fall down some

just as a afterthought the cane handles you show have the connection to the cane down further and the handle has the "T" part built in so it's one piece, lol.
