I am making a cane and need some info

Featured Replies

I recently went to an indoor soccer game. The seats were bleacher type and wide. As I was navigating my climb up and later down, I was a bit dizzy from some of my medication. I thought it would be nice to have something to have with me to steady myself and prevent a fall. I don't want an ordinary cane and am making one with a celtic knot in the handle. I am about 70% done and like it so far, but have a problem,

When I tried it for size, it seemed too long. so my question;

How do I measure my cane to be the right length for my body? Is there a rule of thumb?

I'd  make a temporary one that has some adjustment and work out what I like from experience.    Use it for a while around the house and outside before committing.

Typically the height for a cane should be at your wrist joint when you are standing with your arms hanging down at your side while relaxed and when wearing the typical shoes that you would wear.

You can Google "How to measure a cane" to find a lot of information.

Also here is a link that I came across which may be helpful

You can also go by your local Walmart pharmacy, or any pharmacy that carries adjustable canes and play around with one to find out what height feels good to you.

YA gotta leave sufficient room in the cane for the  spring loaded  sword AND the 410 shotgun chamber and barrel.

Ron, the length of a cane can also be considered by half your height. That is a good starting point as well, in addition to what Allen stated about the cane being up to your wrist joint. From my brief research it appears most canes sold are at a max height of 36", this assuming the max tall height for most folks wold be 6 feet, so the industry divided 6 feet by two and came up with the industry tall standard of 36".

You appear to be a pretty tall guy Ron, so a good starting point would be to take your height with the normal shoes you typically wear, and divide it by two, then check the the wrist method as well.

So I think you have two methods here to zero in on, the height divided by two, and the wrist method.
