January 27, 201511 yr A small box came today. Inside was a mess of "popcorn" and last sunday's funny papers. Inside that was a small, cute plane Don't look like anything out of the ordinary? Take a close look at that cap iron. There is a "Liberty Bell" with a "76" cast into it. More of a Stanley #3 size plane. I had a 7" long block plane handy Almost the same size. This is about the smallest of the Liberty bell planes Stanley made, a #122. There isn't much of a rear handle, just some iron that fits into the space between the thumb and fingers. That loop looking thing? Is how one adjusts the depth of cut. Pull the loop up with a finger, it will cut deeper. Push down to retract. Weelll, took it apart, cleaned a few things up. Checked the edge of the iron.....reverse camber. Middle of the edge was worn more than the corners were. Reground it straight. The bevel was also rounded over, so a flat bevel was ground. Stones, 1K and 2.5K grit paper, and an old leather belt as a strop. Chipbreaker needed a tune up. The cap iron and it's bolt were cleaned up. The knob and the long screw to hold were also done. Sole was checked for flat.......again with that hump behind the mouth. Flattened the sole, about ready to test this little guy out. and we have some oak shavings. This little guy is even smaller than that old Coffin Smoother Think I might be getting a few of these style planes maybe too many? Nah....
January 27, 201511 yr Very nice little plane Steve. I have one of those in my display cabinet. They made them in 1876 to commemorate the 1776 Independence and they sold so good them continued making them into the early 1900's. Nice addition and looks like it is a user also. Nice shavings.
January 27, 201511 yr Steve, I've said it before. My man, you need help. You are addicted. Now lay off that 'Dew.
January 28, 201511 yr Dew IS the addiction. If he didn't waste money on Dew, he could buy more planes.
