January 15, 201511 yr just finished the restaining if all this chestnut after it was reinstalled in clients home. Every piece you see in foyer was nothing but scraps that came out of the house and were remade to fit the new walls that were built including the double door closet. ALL THE WOOD HERE WAS IN PIECES IN THE SHOP. THE CEILING IN DINING ROOM HAS HAND PAINTED MURALS ALL OVER IT. IT'S ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!! WE TALKED THEM OUT OF PAINTING IT ALONG WITH PAINTING ALL THE OTHER WOODWORK!!!!! STAIN IS JACOBEAN AND A COAT OF DANISH OIL ON IT. 4 DAYS JUST TO STAIN.
January 15, 201511 yr Great Stuff~!! I have a room lined with stained chestnut and matching it with lesser woods is not easy.
January 17, 201511 yr Author the white on the risers is wood filler. they are going to paint the risers.
January 18, 201511 yr Absolutely beautiful Mike Glad you were able to talk them out of painting especially over those murals. I love old world stuff like this
January 19, 201511 yr That looks great!! Chestnut is a wood I've never knowingly seen or worked with. Is it a hard wood? Close grain? Hard to work with? Is it a light colored wood like Oak?
January 20, 201511 yr Author Grain is similar to white oak but the wood is much softer. almost the color of red oak but no red, more of a tan. Since borers decimated the chestnut trees it's now an endangered species and expensive as all get out. there wasn't one borer hole in ANY of the pieces.
January 20, 201511 yr Absolutely beautiful and so glad you talked them out of painting and staining it instead. That is some beautiful work.
December 12, 20196 yr Back when I was a kid I remember BIG chestnut trees... All gone....Thing of the past....
December 13, 20196 yr I just hope you never ever sell the house. But if you add more lights it may look better. I love the wood but not the darkness of the overall area. If you sell the house I am sure some stupid person will paint it all white.
