November 19, 201411 yr About 10 years ago, I got an idea on how to cut some very different and difficult exotic wood pieces, reglue them and finally assemble them in a frame. There is about 300 individual pieces in it. The idea was to make a small table out of it. My wife said it was too beautiful to make a table out of and she wanted to hang it on the wall and that is where it has been since. It is about 24"X34" It contains Purple Hart, Yellow Hart, Blood Wood, Paduak, Walnut, Oak, Maple and some others. I had a difficult time deciding how to glue the pieces to a base, due to contraction/expansion and had several suggestions from woodworkers. So I decided to do something radical on my own. I used Goop. It remains semiflexible and moves with the wood. So far it is doing great. It has lost a lot of color, due to oxidation, but still looks good. The one picture was taken when I was assembling the patterns. One of the many patterns I tried before I settled on the one I liked. The other was taken with an iPhone and the picture quality is lacking
November 19, 201411 yr I remember this one Ron, and now it comes together when you told me a few weeks ago to save to the small pieces in my shop! You can always make something from them! Very cool, thanks for bringing this one out of the archives. Ron, what kind of finish did you use on this?
November 19, 201411 yr Very cool~!! I'm guessing the base is some kind of ply? Interesting choice of adhesive. What did you do to get the various irregular shapes to match up?
