While watching the Sunday morning shows this morning, particularly Good Morning America, I came across a short newsflash regarding a privately funded memorial to honor our disabled veterans. It still baffles me why these memorials must be privately funded, and not funded by Uncle Sam, the same folks who put our men and women in harms way, but that is another discussion.

I only wanted to bring attention to our members and guests what is going on in Washington, a spectacular project that honors our disabled men and women who put it all on the line for us. I was very touched by the film short on the project, and I am so happy our disabled veterans are getting the recognition they deserve in the national spotlight. You can click on American Veterans Disabled For Life Memorial to be taken to the home page of the project, the opening day ceremony is less then a week away, it is almost complete.

Below are some of the bronze sculptors that are a part of the memorial.

I could not believe the symbolism behind the items placed in the memorial all the way down to the type of trees planted around the grounds. The Ginkgo Biloba trees that inhabit the grounds were chosen for their near extinction and survival during the ice age, yet they came back, a true symbol of our disabled veterans who are damaged, near death at times, yet they come back. Incredible symbolism I thought.

This is a project that is long overdue in my opinion, and I am personally grateful for the volunteers and philanthropists who made it all happen.

I wasn't even aware of this memorial. We will have to see this. I see they are still accepting monetary donations.

As for the funding of these memorials, the same thing happened with the WWII memorial. I only wish my Dad had lived long enough to see it.

Lew, if you are able to make it that day for the opening ceremony, I sure hope we get some pictures here on TPW and a briefing from you, I am completely jealous of the folks who live near these events, I envy your geographical location Lew!

We won't get there for the dedication, but will try to see it later.

We have found the best way to see some of these things are by bus tours. No parking hassles, no traffic to fight, great company during the trip.
