May 28, 201016 yr Jack Morris sent a message to me that was intended to be posted in the Finishing Forum. The following:"Anybody out there who can help me on this: I have a redwood deck that is water sealed. I would like to put a high gloss finish on the fence and rails. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this? Remember it's redwood. Thanks, Jack"
May 29, 201016 yr Author Since you sealed the wood already, I am guessing with a product such as Thompsons? It might be easier then we think to apply a top coat of varnish. I would go with an exterior poly varnish, or spar varnish with high UV tolerance. But remember, once you apply this first coat, your maintaining it for the life of the deck. Especially in your desert like climate your in, with high heat in the summer, the varnish is going to break down pretty fast. I probably would have gone with a good stain rather then a sealant, the pigments in the stains help fight off the UV rays and also provide protection against water and moisture. Can you elaborate on the type of water seal you applied?
June 5, 201016 yr SICO has some great stuff. I believe it's called formula 33 or formula 77. Expensive but well worth it.
June 13, 201016 yr Author I would still stay away from applying anything besides a protective stain to a deck, your looking for a ton of maintenance once you apply a gloss coating. Just my opinion.
