July 27, 201015 yr I am currently making planters made of ply. I have coated them twice with a sealer and twice with an exterior coat of paint. Hope they will stand up to the weather. They are 3' buy 3' and and 18 " tall. So far I have planed 2 apples, 1 pear and 1 peach. Tomorrow I am going to plant some more but haven't decided yet what to buy. Any ideas on plywood preservation?Posted on behalf of John Morris Senior or Jack
July 27, 201015 yr Author Yep he knows that Larry, but back to the best finish for what he's got. The ply was all he had. What do we do now? Marine varnish? Any ideas? July 27, 201015 yr They make a product that is sold at HD to seal backerboard for showers. It comes in a bucket and it pink when you put it on. It would seal the inside of the box and make it water proof. On the outside you could use a good oil base paint. It will be a constant maintenance issue though. It will need painting regularly.
July 27, 201015 yr They are going to last alot longer than you think as long as the plywood edges are covered or sealed. The main thing is to make certain that you have proper drainage in the bottom of the planter. Rick
July 27, 201015 yr I did exactly what you suggested and treated the edges several times with sealer and paint. Thanks for the reply Rick! I feel a lot better now.
