convert a thickness planer to a thickness/drum sander?

Featured Replies

I've always wondered why they can't offer a conversion kit for converting a thickness planer to a thickness/drum sander.  All the necessary components are there. It would seem that by changing the gear rations on the feed and drum speed.........you would have one. I'd like to upgrade to a better  planer and convert my old one into a sander.

Have any of you heard of any thing like that?

Not a bad idea Ron, and I am sure your aware that is exactly what the Woodmaster series of surfacer's do. They have interchangeable drums and planer cutters. Don't know if you knew that.

If you get this figured out, I am interested in knowing what you did.

I would love to have a drum sander.

OOPS sorry, your looking to convert your existing into a sander, got it. Then disregard my prior post. No, sorry, never heard of anything like that.

I did email Delta a couple of years ago, but no response. Maybe I should contact Harbor Freight.

Well now that we are talking interchangeable drums, isn't this what the Woodmaster I was talking about above accomplishes?

It would have to be more than that. The RPM of the drum and the feed rate would have to be changed. Maybe even a finer adjustment for better depth control.
