Collecting Lumber

Featured Replies

A couple of friends of mine and I went and picked up a load of Cherry lumber. This was cut about five years ago and stored in a barn. The barn was recently torn down and the lumber was re-stacked outside under tarps. It was all stickered well and stacked very good.

The gentleman that had it just wanted it gone as he didn't want to have to move it again. He was telling us he recently build himself a duck blind and the only lumber he had was this cherry.I guess that is a nice duck blind when it is made of cherry.

We didn't measure each piece, but it looks to be about 1200 bd/ft. He said he would take $1000.00 for all of it, so we jumped on it and loaded it up and brought it home.

We only found one snake in the stack as we loaded it. It was about 4 1/2 to 5 foot black snake. I don't like any snake, but at least know it was a black snake made me feel better that there wouldn't be any other snakes in the pile. They (notice it wasn't me) picked it up and took it off a ways and turned it lose.

Got it back to my friends barn and unloaded it and sorted it by size. All of the board are 10' long.

Sorry about the picture quality, it was taken inside and was in the barn. There is more there that it looks like.

All of the wide board are over to the right and all of the 8/4 was stacked outside.

Looks like I will be making a few projects from Cherry.

Hi John,

As you may know that I sell lumber and you truly found a bargain for I sell my 4/4 cherry for $3.75 per BF and the 8/4 is $4.50 per BF. So I congratulate your on a good find. Even in the barn I can tell you have some nice boards in that stack.

A 4/4 x 6" board 10 feet long has 6 BFin it. While a 4/4 6" x 8' has 4 BF. However I would raise it up higher for with it being that low to the ground may cause or allow some moisture from the earth to condense upward to your wood. I would raise it up by at least 18" and put cement blocks on top to keep them from cupping especially the top boards.

We are going to move it and divide it but it started raining as we got to the barn so we just set it off for today. Also by moving it twice today, we were wore out.

I am getting about 500 bd/ft out of the haul. The other will split the rest. All of the 8/4 was on a rack that just happened to be just outside the door.

You are very correct, it needs to be stored higher. It is on 4x4's so it is off the ground some but not where it will be stored.

By the way, did you notice the Unisaw in the background. I have purchased it but got to do a little clean up before I move it to my shop.

I knew it was a bargain. I did give the guy a hug before I left today. Smile.gif

There were some really good pieces. We separated it into 4", 6", 8", and over. There were a few pieces about 14" wide.

Wow John,

You made out like a bandit on this deal, is that the unisaw in the rear of the barn behind the lumber?

That is it. It is on a mobile base but was sitting a little crooked. It is in good shape, but needs the top cleaned up and a new top for the extension table.

I am putting my Rigid saw up for sale so I can get this one in the shop. I am looking forward to having the 4" dust collection port as much as anything from the unisaw. My Rigid does a good job, but I get a lot of dust from it since it only has a 2 1/2" DP.

It was definitely a good day, but boy am I tired of moving wood.

Hi John,

The small dust port on the Ridgid saw was one fault I found when looking at them when I was in the market for one but it is a good saw and the 2 1/2 horse motor is also a decent motor however, I am pleased with my 3 horse Craftsman and the fact that I have it anchored to the floor it truly does a good job and it takes a lot to pinch it down while sawing. Since I have no riving knife or any way of attaching one I just have to make do. With the "0" clearance throat I have in the saw table won't even allow me to put the guard back on the machine.

Boy are you a lucky guy to end up with such a bargain.

Wow!!! Awesome find John!!! I am turning green with envy, can you see a big green glow coming from the west? Yep, it is radiating out my windows as I type this.

So you got some 8/4 too? That is some good stuff man. John, can I talk you into building a rocking chair with that 8/4? That is the perfect size for chair making. You'll need about 36 to 40 board feet of it.

Congrats

One day I am going to start a rocker. There was about 15 pieces of 8/4 or 10/4 about 6 to 8" wide. Most of it looked pretty good, no cracks or checks.

I'll let you know...
