Hello fellow woodworkers.   I have already made a few posts so I guess I should do an induction.
Better late than never they say.  Please
forgive my use of the English language, my spelling, punctuation and grammar
leave a lot to be desired but I’ll do the best I can.

My name is Richard McComas but you may just call me Rich. I visit several forums and some of you may know me by my handle “Warped &
Twisted.

I was born in November of 1943 making me almost 67 years old. I was born and raised until the age of 23 in Red Bluff California.   For those of you who don’t know where that
is it’s about 130 miles North of Sacramento CA. At the age of 23 I was drafted
into the US Army.  While in the Army I
spent the bulk of my time at William Beaumont General Hospital in EL Paso
Texas.  When I was released from the Army
I move to Oklahoma for a
couple year and then moved to Alaska and I been here ever since.

When I got to Alaska I joined the local carpenter and work from the Hall for 25 years and then retired. I’m now working on my second career. I currently and for the past 13 years have been working for the
Anchorage School District as a Maintenance Carpenter. We do all kind of
building maintenance plus a lot of book shelves, cabinets, desk and counter
tops ect.

Woodworking is both a hobby and produces some income to help defray the cost to tool.  I like to build
both cabinets and furniture type projects. 
Over the years I have built somewhere around 12-14 kitchens and a few
pieces of furniture.

I was about 50 years of age before I had a decent shop of my own. My shop now is 28 x 48 with a 12 foot ceiling. I have a pretty good stock
of tools and like to spend as much time as I can in the shop.  My current project is a Kitchen remodel for
myself.  It consists of 19 cabinets. I’m
using prefinished maple plywood for the boxes and Blood-wood for the face
frames and raised panel doors.

Welcome Richard! I would recognize the bear anywhere. I have seen your posts on other forums have always enjoyed your direct approach to posting. You don't mince words that's for sure.

Some of my early education, not only in life but in woodworking came from the school carpenter. He was more of a jack of all trades and in my eyes could do anything. I worked for him for three summers. I wish I had payed more attention to him. The amount of knowledge I gained is tremendous but could have been much more if I was more attentive.

Welcome Richard! Thanks for the formal introduction, and I am so glad you did. There are quite a few things we don't know about a guy until an introduction like this.

Looks like I followed your footsteps somewhat, an Army guy myself, then after the Army I became a maintenance carpenter for Sea World of San Diego, cabinets, bookshelves to roofing. Now a Land Surveyor.

Red Bluff, CA, not to familiar with that area, sounds like a small town?

I got a question for you Richard, I have always envisioned Alaska as somewhat isolated, obviously, thus the material and goods must be more expensive. How is the shopping for lumber up there, hard to come by? Expensive? Is a board of cherry difficult to get, or oak or any standard American hardwood?

I love Alaska, someday my wife and I are going to take a trip up there. We were watching a program about Alaska State Troopers sometime ago, and my gosh, thee most beeeeautiful country I have ever seen.

I have never been to Alaska, but it is on my bucket list. Of all the things I have seen about Alaska it just looks like one of those places you have to see in person.

Sounds like kitchens are definitely near the top of your resume. That is something we are talking about in our house right now, but haven't gotten any further than talking. As a matter of fact, until I finish the downstairs bathroom I am not sure she is going to talk to me too much. lol
