Night stand project

Featured Replies

Since my unscheduled retirement I think I'm driving my wife nuts being around the house all day.  While we're waiting for the house deal in Ohio to get done she's put me on a project of making a couple of night stands for the bedroom.  It's been since January that I was actually able to work on something so it's a little slow starting out.  I decided to do them one at a time to be sure I knew what I was doing.  So far I've got 2 sides put together and the glue-ups for the top and shelf put together and sanded to 3/4 thick.  I did put the sides together with Kregs instead of the mortise/tenon.  I'm having a good time working on it, but getting used to my dad's equipment instead of what I had at school is taking a little time.  This picture is the one from the magazine but I'll try to get a picture of what I've got done so far.  I think she's got her eye on the bed that matches, and there's a couple other pieces to go along with it.

that's going to be a beaut Roy. Keep us in the loop how this turns out. And post pics! We love pics!

I can completely relate to getting started again after being away from it for awhile. But once you get rolling you get rolling good.

By the way Roy, in case you didn't know, you can post the photos directly into your post by clicking on either the photo icon or the camera icon at the text editor tool bar. Like this.

If you need help with this let me know, I'll fix ya right.

Good luck on this wonderful project. What are you using for table saw etc, what kind of equipment does your dad have? You might have spoke of this in a prior post.

Yea, what The American Woodworker said, especially "We Love Pictures". Good luck on your project.

Roy that is a neat night stand and it is fun to build.

I built the night stand and the chest only I made a few modifications to them. My wife didn't like the corbels on the ends so I left those off. At the time I didn't have any QSWO and wasn't sure I was good enough to build it with expensive lumber so mine is poplar and stained ebony.

The night stand was the last part of the set I built. I started with a pencil post bed. It is made out of pine 2x4's and 2x6's. The headboard is 1 by material.

I didn't have many tools in the shop back then either, but it turned out pretty good I think.

LOML liked the bed so much I did the chest.

And then she wanted a lingerie chest, so I modified the chest plans and this is what she got.

So jump in there and keep us posted on your journey as it starts with one piece and always grows.

Give us pictures as soon as you can. If you need help with posting them, let me know and I will be happy to assist.

I hope you realize that posting more pictures of the set is just getting me in deeper trouble. I'm not using QSWO either, mine is going to be just plain red oak and she wants golden oak stain on it. I've made three chests for my daughters for graduation using that combination and they have looked pretty good.

Good looking furniture John, thanks for the photos.

Didn't mean to get you in deeper, but I have found that one piece always lead to another. Sometimes it even leads to getting a new tool. 41.gif I am planning, (cause that is as far as I have gotten), a table for the kitchen. I know that is going to cause me to have to do chairs and I had never done a chair. That may really bring on more tools. 113.gif

Nothing wrong with plain red oak.

Thanks Rick I had a lot of fun building those pieces. That was some of the first furniture I built.

She's already mentioned a dining room table so I don't need to worry about running out of suggestions from her for quite awhile.

Well that is part of what keeps us going. We have to have projects to have something to work on. I just hate that sometimes hers are the ones I have to put off to take care of others.
