September 30, 201015 yr The gentleman wrote me a check today, we shook hands, and I had a little water well up in my eyes. Right now it is on display at our local art center here in my town. When I put the chair in the center, it was with the understanding that it would stay through the holidays on exhibit with all the other wonderful local art. The gentleman loved the idea that it was a part of an art festival, it made the chair that much more valuable and interesting to him. He bought it for his wife's 50th birthday this Sunday. I am having separation anxiety now. But now I can go out and purchase more lumber for the next one. So, a good start to my new business venture, and hopefully a lucrative one at that. Thanks for listening.Man, my garage seems so empty.
September 30, 201015 yr Let me be the first you give you a HUGE congratulations. That's really cool and I'm so happy for you. I wanted to say that in different word but this is a family forum. The empty shop feeling won't last long. Time heals all wounds they say. I'm going to give you a week to get the next one started. Have you decided what flavor of wood you are going to use on this one?
September 30, 201015 yr Author Thanks Richard for the words. I think I know where the expletive would have gone in your congratulations. Your right about a week, next weekend I will be going to a local small sawmill guy who mills urban lumber downed by storms and tree services and power companies. I am hoping to find some nice wild walnut for the next chair. I am excited to get going on the next one, this one should move along a bit quicker, I don't have the plethora of jigs to make on this go around. That was about 20 percent of the last build. Thanks again Richard, have a great day
October 1, 201015 yr Author Not rude at all, 3000.00 My first chair, and more to come, hopefully as my name gets out there, and I can create a demand, then I can ask for more. But I am happy with the outcome. Thanks Josh And, your shop is very cool man, I still love that old brick wall where your lathe is, a lot of character in that ol shop of yours.
October 1, 201015 yr Congrats, John, I'm sure it was hard to part with that chair, but what a validation of the quality! Now you can build a few more -Dan
October 1, 201015 yr Author Thanks Dan, thanks alot man. I still have to go through that video you linked for me. I just need a couple hours away from the high traffic household pattern we've been in the few last weeks. Thanks for all your help Dan, you were a great sounding board for me when I was finishing up my rocker. So, do you have anymore in the future Dan? October 1, 201015 yr Author Thanks Josh, I am humbled by your remarks I must admit. Please tell your lovely wife, Thank You, from me. And, please tell your wife that your going to make one too!!! Have a wonderful weekend, hey, aren't you and John Moody meeting up this weekend?
October 1, 201015 yr I sure hope so. I have several things on the honey-do list left to complete, and I made both my sons wooden swords (their designs) out of cherry that are pretty cool - I'll post pics here soon. Then I hope to start another one, but it will be at least several months. In the meantime I think about what changes I might want to make in the design to make it my own (maybe premature since I can certainly use more practice on a tried-and-true design). You may have noticed on the yahoo group that Hal Taylor has changed his arm shape to remove the sharp corner at the "elbow hole", that's something I will also change for sure. Also, take a peek at the latest Fine Woodworking back cover. There's a New Zealand guy's rocker that is a real stunner and thought provoking for what is possible with rocking chairs. Let me know how you do on your lumber hunt. All the best- Dan The American Woodworker said:Thanks Dan, thanks alot man. I still have to go through that video you linked for me. October 1, 201015 yr Author Dan, I thought of softening that arm as well, I plan on making a different headrest on the next one, and my rockers are going to be more drawn out and swoopy. I don't think your design changes are premature at all, go for it! Post pics soon! A cherry sword, man now that's cool!
October 2, 201015 yr HEY Congratulations!!!! I have been in the shop solid since I got back from vacation and trying this morning to catch up and saw the post. I am excited for you. It is hard sometimes to let them go, but it also gives you great satisfaction know that is was good enough for someone to write that check for. I look at the projects I make and get attached as I am making them, but when someone looks at it and wants to purchase it, that is when you really realize how nice it is. Great job, I feel like we have all been right there in the shop with you on this chair and it is exciting to me to know you sold it so quickly and got a nice price for it. I can't wait to start following the next one. Here's the tip of the hat to you for a great job.
