October 6, 201015 yr I got off the phone awhile ago with a very nice fellow who is a local sawyer. He air dries his lumber. I called him because I am looking for some lumber for the next rocker. He has lumber alright, but none dry, but that's alright. Because what he does have, I can purchase now and it will be ready for rocker number 3 or 4. He has black walnut cut 8/4, he says is clear, and he is sending pics tomorrow. He wants 4 bucks a foot, I need about 40 bdft so that'll cost me 160 bucks for 8/4 black walnut. And the great part, is the slabs are 24 inches wide. I can't wait to see it. The same fellow (Brent) has some highly figured burl Eucalyptus that he says is absolutely beautiful, wet as well. This is great stuff for chair building. But I still need to track down some ready build lumber this weekend. I need to get started on another rocker the following weekend. But I would love to pick up that green lumber and let it sit in my garage for about 8 or 9 months. By that time, I should be on my third or fourth rocker if all goes well. By the way his website is California Reclaimed LumberI will post the pics of what he sends me tomorrow. Thanks for reading.
October 7, 201015 yr Author I doubt it will Richard, knowing this guy. Hey Richard, what kind of hinges are you using on those blood wood cabinets of yours?
October 7, 201015 yr I not saying he would knowingly sell you wood with bugs. I guess if you're a sawyer (I'm not) it's easy to tell. I've just heard that sometimes air dried lumber can get vested without knowing it right away. But then what do I know. I really have on experience it that area.
October 7, 201015 yr I took a few pieces of spalted maple firewood from my pile after sawing them into slabs and letting the dry I found where bugs had hatched and left carcasses in thewood. Althoug I never saw any around my shop.
October 7, 201015 yr Author Hey Richard, back to my other question, euro hinges, knife hinges, and I didn't notice, are those doors overlay or inset? I know this is the wrong thread, but for some reason it just came to my mind when we were talking lumber. Richard McComas said:I not saying he would knowingly sell you wood with bugs. October 7, 201015 yr Author John, lets say this does happen, how do those areas look, character that you could build into a project? A mess? Perforated through out? Can you work around them? October 7, 201015 yr Author oh hey, I knew what you meant Richard, I didn't think you were insinuating anything, when I say "knowing this guy" I was speaking to his quality control. Since I am buying the lumber precut into slabs and not in log form, I imagine it would be pretty easy to spot any negative characteristics of the lumber. Thanks for the heads up Richard. October 7, 201015 yr "Hey Richard, back to my other question, euro hinges, knife hinges, and I didn't notice, are those doors overlay or inset? John, your question implies you have asked this question before. If you have I some how missed it. Anyway it's euro hinges and 3/4 overlay. There's not fancy in the design of this kitchen. The only thing unique is the Blood Wood. I say unique because I have never seen anyone do a kitchen in Blood Wood. As of yet I do not have an idea for using them 3" wide x 14" long only but will find something to build
October 8, 201015 yr That's an unbelievably good price - would easily go double that in upstate NY. If shipping wasn't so expensive I'd consider trying to get some myself. If you use the old "1 year per inch thickness" rule of thumb you're going to need closer to 2 years for the wood to passively dry to equilibrium.
