I found another local mill

Featured Replies

I have been in contact with Brent Cashion of Urban Logs to Lumber and he is going to crack open that walnut log he has sitting around.  He will inform me when that one is ready to look at, it will be green, but as I told Brent, I can have it sitting at my home in the interim for a chair down the road.

Now lately I have come into contact with another sawyer (Rob Durfos) down my road, his outfit is about an hour from me, and he uses local trees downed by nature or for other reasons.  He runs Tule Peak Lumber. He has Claro walnut and a whole lot of other varieties.  I am going to make that trip hopefully this week if it fits into his schedule. They are very busy over there, a two man outfit with a ton of work, appointments only.

If I make it over there I will report back, hopefully with some pictures if he lets me snap a few off.  I don't know if he ships, but his prices are very reasonable.

And, if all goes well, I will be working on rocker number two in a week!

That cool, finding close saw mills. I sure wish we had some hardwoods up here.

Good Morning Gentlemen,

John, I am happy for you that you found a local sawyer and it is very easy to store your lumber in a well ventilated constant temparature and can leave it for one year for every inch in thickness to properly air dry the wood.

My cousin who took the maple log from my place that I had to cut down for my shop addition and the day before yeasterday he brought back the 5/4 slabs he had cut. I haven't figured how many BF there is but it is a small amount but all in all I will be able to make something out of it sooner or later. I just have to make some room by rearranging the wood on my rack on the top tier and sticker them well as they already are on a pair of horses.

Richard, I have been selling and shipping lumber at a reasonable rate and should you care to purchase some hardwood from me I am sure I can arrange the shipping that won't break the bank.

Following is my price list;

I hope you will find our prices reasonable.

Well, I didn't make it to Tule Peak yesterday, the rain was coming down all day and it was just not a good day to do this. I called Rob Durfos at Tule Peak and asked for a weather check in his neck of woods and he agreed it was poor day to look at lumber on his 20 acre property. We will shoot for next week same time.

The silver lining to this rain? All the sudden my Friday opened up, and our daughters softball coach called and said todays game is canceled because of the mud on the fields, so my Saturday opened up, and all the sudden, I got a free weekend! So, I will be cleaning up the shop, organizing, and playing monopoly with the kids. Tomorrow we are going to try to make a run for the mountains and visit some friends, and look for some of those pine cones you wood turners have been wanting to try out.

You are making me very jealous.

Around my neck of the woods, we have about three good Amish sawmills. All within about 15 miles of the house. 20 miles away is an Amish retail lumber YARD. 25 miles to the west of here is Hogue Lumber, ketlersvill, Ohio. They also do a LOT of veneer sawing. Ralph is 45 miles to the southeast of me, about 1 hour's drive. Yep, lumber all around here, and I can only afford Pine.

Retail Amish Store notes: Last i checked, Levi sold a full line of P-C tools. He also had a 15" wide planer that ran on, not 220 V, but AIR Power. The same air compressor also ran his large cabinet saw. A propane generator ran the lights for the place. Strange looking out of the showroom windows and seeing a horse and buggy sitting there.

Hey Steve,

You said all I can afford is pine. Well my friend I have 4/4 poplar for $1.50 per board foot and I will S#S for $.80 per lineal foot. Now just figure a 6" wide x 8' of poplar is only 4 BF so 4 x $1.50 is $6.00 and 8' x $.80 is $6.40 for a total of $12.40 and that is with no knots for it is all clear lumber. Now go to the lumber yard and try to buy clear white pine for that price.

It can't be done. I called my lumber yard which is Carter Lumber and asked them what they were getting for that much clear white pine and their answer was $16.00 plus. Now Steve what can you afford?

Hey Steve,

Since you are a good member of these forums and in good standing, I have a deal for you.... Buy some poplar off me and if you help me S3S I won't charge you for the planing. Now how's that for service?
