Pen making on the lathe requires a hard durable finish.  Many companies sell wax and shellac based finishes that look great at first but wear off quickly in use.  To really finish a pen you need something that will last and look good.  On my pens I use CA (super glue) and BLO (boiled linseed oil).  I learned the technique from William Young.  http://wmyoung.proboards.com
