Resawing some firewood

Featured Replies

Today I was out in the shop doing some honey do stuff. I started to work on a new door threshold for our front entry doorway, but the flies are so bad in our area right now I couldn't leave the front door open for any length of time to work on it. So, I got sidetracked and cracked open a log just for fun.  I don't even know what I can do with the boards, but for me it's just fun and somewhat relaxing to find out what lay inside a chunk of firewood.

I didn't know what type of log this was, can you tell before you scroll down and see the other pics?
That's my framing hatchet I used to debark the log.

My poor mans right angle re-saw jig with the log screwed from the back of the jig securing it in place.

First run.

Second run, I sliced 1" boards.

Third run, I got a couple 1" boards from this set up, now I have a flat frame of reference.

I rotate it 90 degrees to produce another flat side.

Now the flat side is set up against the band-saw fence without the right angle jig. Now that I have two faces I can rip my boards normally.

This little log about 24 inches long yielded some pretty interesting cedar.

It's amazing what a little firewood can have inside it.

So there ya have it, took me about 20 minutes to come up with a pleasant surprise, not to mention the pleasant smell that filled the shop air. I had no idea what this log was, but as soon as the band saw blade entered the log, I knew what I was cutting, the aroma was unmistakable.

I have no idea what I am going to with these little slabs of 4/4. But I'll throw them in my wood bin and wait for the time to call.

Thanks for looking

By the way, I did this on my Grizz Ultimate Bandsaw with a 3/4"  4TPI blade.

Yep, sawing up a chunk of wood is like opening a Christmas present. You're never sure what you'll get.

Sometimes it's nice to just rip or joint a board of cedar, as you said, just for the aroma. Nice boards you ended up with.

That is the way my shop has been smelling for a while. It is pretty good for a while and then it starts to get to.

Pretty interesting boards. It is fun sometimes to just cut some and see what you get.
