Walnut and Animals Question

Featured Replies

Brent Cashion's experience with Black Walnut and his horse, got me to thinking about my two dogs that hang in my shop all the time. Of course I am working with Claro Walnut, anyone know if this would have any adverse affects on my dogs?

Here is a link to the Black Walnut tree. It does give some warnings about using it as a bedding for horses and dogs. There seems to be a lot of information on the Internet about it and some that seems to conflict at times. But the dangers seem to be more in the dust and shavings than in the wood itself.

That is why I said there are sections that seem to conflict. I have dogs at the house and they are just outside my shop and I use a lot of walnut. I have never seen any signs in them that it was a problem.

I have also seen questions from people worrying about using walnut in cutting boards, but I read that it is not a problem used in that manner either.

Well, I guess my animals (no horses) aren't allergic. Never used it as bedding, though.
What the article states about it's effects on plants and hoofs is definitely true. Goats' and Alpacas' hoofs are also susceptible.
