November 23, 201015 yr Thank you Rich for your suggestion to add the Illustrated Lumber Grading Guide to our site. I created a separate area for "Lumber Resources". You can access this by going to the top tab "Resources" and click on it to access Lumber Resources or hover your cursor over the tab and click on Lumber Resources. And the chart will be found in there. It is suggestions like this that build our site, and make it more useful and interesting. We are always looking for new content, so if you guys have any ideas or entries like this, please don't hesitate to notify me. We love participation, this is "our" network, and we make it what it is, without you all, The American Woodworker fails to exist! John
November 23, 201015 yr Hi John, Since I sell rough sawn hardwood I grade the wood first as FAS (first and seconds) which should be 83.5% clear wood and free from blemishes. Then work down the ladder of choosing the various grades accordingly. My supplier had to learn my methods of grading until he found out that all the wood I want for t=retail is cabinet and furniture grade. When he slipps up and brings #3grade lumber I tell him that I will just cut them up for stickers or garden stakes for clients.
