Old woodworking magazines?

Featured Replies

I'll bet I am a lot like the rest of you guys and gals in that I accumulate a lot of woodworking magazines. I was giving them to a local hospital and rest home in Ohio, when I lived there. My wife also has a bunch of quilting magazines. Here in the Denver area, we have searched for a place that may get some good use out of them, nursing homes, Dr offices, dentist offices, etc. All have said they can't use them.

In most cases, if you want something from a back issue, it will be on that magazine's web site or it is available somewhere else on the web. So I don't keep them.

What do you do with the old ones you have?

Gosh I wish I could do what you do Ron. I have mine in various places, my wife gets on me for stashing them all over the house, under the bed, on the nightstand, on the coffee table. You name it, I need to do what your doing and donate them to a good cause. In reality I don't even look back at 2/3rds of them.  Thanks for the great idea Ron.

I used to dig up all the old ones I could for school.  The guys would go through them to get ideas for projects.  I'd try to protect them like they were gold, but the guys just didn't have the same appreciation for them that I had and I've gone on numerous rants when I found a page torn out or a cover ripped off.  If you can find any wood shops left in school around you I bet they'd take any you have.

There is one I never thought of. I'll try that.

Thanks.

I'd let them look at mine sometimes, if it was someone I trusted, but for the most part I tried to guard mine.  I'm a selfish type and want mine, you'll see me on "Hoarders" someday.  I'm always looking for woodworking magazines, checking the piles at Goodwill.  If you check there are lots of them for sale on ebay.  That might be a way for you to get rid of them and be able to pick up a new tool at the same time.

I hate to say but I have them in a cabinet in my shop. I rarely get rid of a magazine. Not sure why. Just think I need to keep them.

I like what you are doing, I may have to check into that.

John, when we moved, we auctioned off everything except the main things we wanted. I found hundreds, perhaps thousands of things I had saved. Saved like a pack rat. It was then that I vowed that if something isn't used in 2 years time, I would sell it, give it away or toss it. I have not tossed much, but I have given away things to others and sold some. That includes the clothes in my closet, if I don't or can't use them, I give them to Goodwill.

As for the magazines, Wood (others too) offer a complete index of their articles, starting from day one.  You can search for the article you want and purchase it for a small fee. Much better than having hundreds of magazines in storage taking up valuable space. But I don't like to toss my wood magazines, I KNOW there others that would love to have them, but finding them is the hard part.
