Good Evening Friends,

My producer and I left to the house on State Route 38 just south of London, Ohio this morning with the wind chill factor of -10º F. and arrived there to start raising the veranda whole videoing the progress as we went along. I started the tape by informing the folks what we were about to do as we set up the different procedures and prepared for the day. We were fortunate as the house blocked any wind that would cause us stress from the cold chill factor. It was still cold but we were dressed for working under these conditions and the sun was shining bright for the better part of the day. Even with the sun shining it didn't give us any warm temperatures but did lift our spirits so it didn't seem as cold and at one point I even broke a sweat.

As we went along we got a lot of sequences on the camera as well as both of us raising the veranda and finally we were able to get some anchors drilled into the masonry and clamp the top of the structure to the building. Since the time was slipping by, we wrapped up about 3:00 PM so that gave us 6 hours on site and on the job, and we were able to spread a canvas over the top and secure it with plywood strips so there would be no weather damage to the structure that we uncovered and removed some boards so I could get down inside of the structure to drill with a hammer drill and set the anchor bolts.

I had made four 1 1/2 x 6" donuts to slide over the anchors and then placed a 2 x 4 block below the bolt while the donut top was on the rafter which allowed me fo pull the rafter to the building. The 4 x 4 x 12' diagonal braces worked fine for as we jacked the veranda up they moved forward and helped in the holding of the structure up and back against the building.

After we secured the canvas we gathered all of the tools and loaded them in the van and took one more sequence of me standing on the porch under the veranda to finalize this segment of our show. Hopefully Andrew will get it on you tube soon and you will be able to see what we did today as a preview of further taping of the work we are going to do to once again re-construct this porch in the Federal style.

Respectfully,

Ralph

Sounds cold and exciting. I hope he gets the tape done soon.

Hi John,

The footage we shot today is only a part of the complete video but it should be enough to grasp someone's interest in maybe the purchasing of the complete DVD. The next session will be the construction of the trusses that will make up the balance of the whole front of the house veranda with box/built in gutters.
