December 18, 201015 yr This is the bookcase that I built for my son. The plan called for 6 shelves, but I think that's too much for this one. I'd asked about wiping the poly finish and this is how it turned out. He's pretty happy with it.
December 18, 201015 yr Roy! That is some fine work friend! Very clean and professional and perfect grain match. Great job, one helluva job!
December 18, 201015 yr John said it and I agree with him, very nice book case. I'm happy you like the wipe on varnish.
December 18, 201015 yr Author Today I'll probably start the finish on the book nook that I goofed up and see if I can get it done for Christmas. I've got another one cut up to do right, but it will never be done in time so the goofed one is a fill in until then. I'll do the wipe on for it too, that went fairly quick, recoating in a just a couple hours you can build up several coats in a day. As for the book case, I'm not so sure about the perfect grain match, I just put it together as it came, if it came out right it was by mistake. One thing I do know though is 3/4 oak plywood from Lowes is crud, paper thin top veneer and lines in it that don't take the stain as well, but it is probably cheaper than going and getting better stuff from a cabinet supplier.Richard McComas said:John said it and I agree with him, very nice book case. December 20, 201015 yr Roy, awesome book case. The grain pattern in the back is really neat.  I also like the grain pattern in the bottom. Looks like that finish worked out pretty good.  Here are my thumbs up.
December 23, 201015 yr Hello Roy, that is a very nice book case indeed and the red oak grain on the left stile looks like it was fluted. Very unusual but nice. Â Here are a couple of pictures of the set of two I am working on; Â

December 24, 201015 yr Ralph, those are nice bookcases also. What are you building them out of. The grain looks soft. Â
December 24, 201015 yr Hi John,I am making them out of red Oak plywood and quarter sawn white oak for the face frames and doors. Wait till you see the doors after I have stained everything in Golden Hickory. The finish will be 5 Coats of hand rubbed Tung Oil. Â
