old wood - but new to me

Featured Replies

I took delivery today of two truckloads of old redwood logs from central California . They had been laying around on a private ranch for some time , and are now going to be slabbed here at my place  . Sort of a Christmas present to myself !  ning-redwoodlogs1-51005-66.jpgning-redwoodlogs2-51005-65.jpgning-redwoodlogs3-51005-55.jpg

Cool, old wood is only old on the outside.Smile.gif

Rob, that those are really really big logs! Can you put and approx age on these? And, is old growth redwood hard? Harder then say redwood for decking and fences?

Would it be stable and strong enough for a chair?

Now on to the safety of unloading those huge logs, you guys must have some protocols for unloading those beasts? Safety and all, or do you just use common sense and good communication with the others on the ground?

John , I didn't counted the rings but the wood is tighter than some

other redwood I have here . My guess is that it would still be too soft

for a chair though . Just after I snapped one of the pictures a 3/8

chain parted and one of the big logs hit the ground from about six feet

in the air . Five logs weighed in at 55,000 pounds .I am experimenting

with ways to harden-up the woods density - stay tuned.

Now that is some serious logs.

Merry Christmas to you for your Christmas present. I just love it when we give ourselves what we want for Christmas!!
