About me

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I am new here and would like to thank you all for the warm welcome you have given me. I am a retired surveyor but woodwork has always been my hobby.

I have made a few pieces of furniture over the years but my main interest and yes passion is decorative box making. Until she got married my youngest daughter used to help me with my projects and yes I do mean helped she had become quite an accomplished woodworker.

I think I got my love of wood from my grandfather who was a carpenter, I used to spend my school vacations in his workshop "helping" him, I learnt a tremendous amount from him!

I have tried to add a couple of photo's of my more recent box projects hope you like them.

Oh my! Michael, those are exquisite. Absolutely beautiful. There are so many mastered skills required to make a box as exquisite as yours, I don't know where to begin.

First, the darker wood box, what species is involved in the making of that box?

Same goes with the lighter box, I am thinking Maple of course, but you being from a different continent all together than from us Yanks, your wood you chose could be a different species then we are used to seeing around here.

Thank you for sharing your work, how about the inside of the boxes, have you done anything with them?

It appears Grandpa got you off to a wonderful start as a youngster.

Michael, those are some great looking boxes. Boy, I am glad I don't have to pick a favorite between the two because it would be hard. I love the inlays and the contrast are so good.

I am sure that was very special getting to work with your daughter. Those are times that sometimes we look right over but realize later how special it was to share a passion such as this with them.

Thanks for sharing your work and we look forward to seeing many more. I too am interested int he wood choices when you get a chance.

Welcome to the site!  I can see by your handywork that you are in the right place.  I look forward to reading more about your woodworking passion.

In reply to those who asked, the carcass of the boxes is simply made from good quality plywood, why? It does not warp easily.

This carcass is then veneered, the light wood box is veneered in maple, birds eye maple and banded in tulip wood. The darker box is veneered in butt walnut, and banded in box wood and tulip wood.

The maple veneered box is fitted out to take my wife's knitting things and the walnut box is a writing box, much cheaper and more satisfaction than buying an antique box.
