Rocking Chair Back Braces

Featured Replies

Tonight I got to spend a couple hours in the shop, and I spent the time ripping the lams for the back braces and sorting and gluing them in my back brace form.

This first photo is the back brace lams ripped, the two assemblies on the right and left are the walnut stacks, and the two in the center are ash.

The second picture shows the matched grain pattern that will really show up nicely in the finished chair's back braces. See the lower portion of these lams, the beautiful ribbon affect, these back braces will really pop in the final rub down.

ning-backbracelams1-50790-80.jpg?width=7The back brace lams are now sorted and stacked, the walnut lams are sandwiching two lams of ash. Ash is used for it's tendency to stay in a formed shape, it has been used for centuries in bows.

ning-orderoflams-50790-12.jpg?width=750The next photo are the lams stacked and ready for glue up. Note how nicely the figured grain is matched, when these are assembled in the chair, the flowing matching grains are really going to be eye catching.

ning-lamsorganized-50790-3.jpg?width=750Here we have two stacks glued up in one shot.

ning-glueinguplams-50790-23.jpg?width=75The next pic shows a total of four lam stacks (four complete back braces) glued up in my doubled up form. I have a total of 8 back braces to make, so that means I need to make two glue runs with this set up.

ning-lamglueup2-50790-37.jpg?width=750The end shot of the setup, this might help explain how this is done.

ning-lamglueup-50790-42.jpg?width=750Tomorrow I will glue up the other four back braces the same manner I did these four, and I will also be ripping the rocker lams and I will be able to glue them up tomorrow as well.

Thanks for looking folks!

looking good John, I love the grain pattern on that walnut also.

We are really off and running now. Looks great and yep, we need all of the clamps we can get.

I really like the effect that will give. Should make it really pop.

Fantastic John, that wood is looking so good. Glad to see you getting some time to work on the chair. Thanks for the photos.

BTW, how many more clamps do you wish you had?

Rich.

John, I still don't have enough clamps! I have to stagger my glue up operations because of lack of clamps. I will invest in more in the future.

Rich, about 100 more clamps, really! I could use em, I could have multiple operations going on at the same time and it would speed up production,I am working on it though!
