December 30, 201015 yr This is my first box and the dress she wanted to display. It came out OK, but if I do it again it will be a lot better.
December 30, 201015 yr I love it Ron, one small constructive critique, is the blue hanger a permanent part of the display? If so, I might opt for black or clear pins to keep the dress in place.Great job Ron!
December 30, 201015 yr Author She wanted the hanger and the color. I never argue with a woman on colors. They like what they like......PERIOD.As for the pins, they were an after thought. I warned her about how the dress may move when the box is tilted and it did. So she decided on the pins, mostly because it is a hand made dress about 100 years old and they would hold it in place. For a backing, I choose eight inch composite board and sprayed it flat black. Both were not great decisions as the board was very hard and the flat black showed the slightest dust and was rough to the touch. The American Woodworker said:I love it Ron, one small constructive critique, is the blue hanger a permanent part of the display? December 30, 201015 yr Heck I didn't even notice the pins on there already! I thought I was coming up with an original idea on this one. But as far as arguing with your better half, well I got one thing to say!
December 30, 201015 yr  Looks good to me Ron. Next time maybe a dot or two of 2 sided tape could be used to hold the dress in place. To this day I've never build anything I couldn't say, I can do better next time.
December 30, 201015 yr Ron as I said earlier I love it. I fully understand following their instrucstions  The shadow boxes I made for the golf clubs, I cut a rabbit in the frame and covered the back with felt before I attached it. After it was attached I trimmed the felt at the back. It gives a little softer look. I couldn't tell from the picture that you had painted the back, I thought it was black felt.  Another nice touch that is not real expensive is an engraved brass plate with the information about the dress attached maybe between the dress and the frame at the bottom. I got one done for one of the Cedar Chest and it was $5.00.  I also can't tell from the picture and I know from the other thread there was talk about glass or lexan. Is the dress behind glass or did you opt for the lexan?  As I said to start, I love what you did with it and it will be a prize for a long time. Very sweet.  Â
December 30, 201015 yr Author I did go with Lexan. The local big box is about a mile away and they had precut pieces. One was the exact size I wanted. Another factor was my granddaughter and her curiosity. If she drops this one, it won't break. John Moody said: Ron as I said earlier I love it. December 30, 201015 yr Looks great Ron. The real plus is that all of the females are happy with it!!!
December 30, 201015 yr Nicely done Ron. I'm about to embark on this same adventure myself to display a shirt that my recently departed father would wear all the time when he would go dancing. Rick
