What kind of tree

Featured Replies

This tree grows in my daughter's back yard here in Colorado. My first guess was a grafted tree. Then I saw others and I found out, do you know what kind it is?ning-aspensm-50754-95.jpg

Looks like the same cottonwoods we have in this area Ron. What do you think, cottonwood? Do you have a pic of the leaves?

It is actually an Aspen. Maybe a certain variety, don't know. After I saw this one I had no idea. Then when I was on a road trip, I saw an area full of them and was told they were Aspen.

aspen is correct, probably a silver or quaking variety.

are the leaves a dull silvery white on the underside?

Yep, dull silvery. Sure is an unusual bark in  how it abruptly ends a rough texture and goes smooth.

The rough bark is what fooled me, I thought that white stuff above was paint, some folks paint their trees so they don't wack em with there car at night. I thought the aspen had smooth silvery white bark the entire tree.

You will see patches of intermixed smooth and rough bark on the aspen trees around here.Ours are commonly called popple which is a local adaptation of the name poplar which I belive fall into the quaking aspen family.
