January 1, 201115 yr Please be gentle. This is a hall tree that my dear mother requested for Christmas. The unit was constructed of 3/4" red oak plywood and red oak boards. Finish was about 10 coats of amber shellac. Â
January 1, 201115 yr No reason to be gentle on this one Randall! That is one very cleanly executed hall tree. Great design, excellent grain pattern and great color and the dark knobs are a great accent touch. One hockey sticks of a job partner!Just a hint, on posting pics, you can click on the pic icon next to the "LINK" icon and browse your computer to pull those pictures in real time and pretty like. Give it a try if you like. And again, great job on the hall tree. Be proud of that one!
January 1, 201115 yr Randall, that is a great job. Very nice grain patterns. I love to use shellac and you got a really good even finish with it. Some people have a problem with shellac but that looks great. I bet you mother was excited and very proud of you. Excellent work my friend. Thanks for sharing with us. ( I gave you a little help with the pictures) I didn't see John's post until I had already got them up for you.
January 1, 201115 yr That's what I say John, Randall did a helluva job on that, and shellac to boot! Shellac can be a pita to work with, Randall did you spray it or brush it?
January 1, 201115 yr Author Thank you guys very much. I applied the shellac by hand using the pad technique described by Steve Mickley (http://www.hardwoodlumberandmore.com/Articles/ArticleViewPage/tabid/75/ArticleId/15/Applying-Shellac.aspx) Got to admit, first time I ever used shellac but it definitely won't be the last. Thanks again for the help on the pictures.
January 1, 201115 yr Mickley is a regular encyclopedia of finishing, his site is a great resource for finishing. Great job again Randall. January 1, 201115 yr nice work, nice and square and solid, that will fill up soon, that beats my hall closet all jammed up.
January 2, 201115 yr Author Thank all of you for the kind words. Ron, I sure can. Maybe able to do some bartering or something of the like.
January 2, 201115 yr I refuse to be gentle! FANTASTIC! That looks great! I used to love red oak but I tend to get little tired of it....but then every once in a while I see something someone has built with it and it rejuvenates my original love for it...and this has done just that! I love it!Just a side note: I think I used more exclamation marks on this post than I ever have...that's gotta mean something.
