January 8, 201115 yr I just purchased plans from WOODCraft to build a shoulder plane. I have been needing one for my chair building to trim up the rabbets in the seat joints, and I have been reluctant to pull the trigger on a 160 dollar plus shoulder plane from one of the big boys like Veritas or LN. Believe me, I would love to buy one from those tool greats, but right now, it's just not in the crystal ball. So I sprung 6 bucks and bought the plans "Shop Made Shoulder Plane". I know I have seen this in many a woodworking magazine, but I didn't want to sort through my boxes of woodworking magazines looking for the plan. 6 bucks is a small price to pay to get going on this now. I have the scraps already in my possession for this build, and I have a complete Stanley 45 set that I could pull the plane blade out of to use for this home made shoulder plane. So, out I go to make a tool, I have a feeling this could be the beginning of a new leaf for me, I think this is going to be fun, and I might just get hooked into making my own planes as many other woodworkers are doing and have done for centuries. Wish me luck! See yall tonight with hopefully some pics and good news of the build. Here is what it should resemble when I have it completed.
January 8, 201115 yr Author Oh, and did I mention, since I made the purchase by going through our WOODCRAFT link here on The American Woodworker, a portion of that purchase goes to The Wounded Warrior Project! That is how we are set up, we get 5 percent commissions on purchases made through our site from any of our affiliate's, and that is in turn used to pay our hosting dues and the remainder is given to The Wounded Warrior Project. We are a 100 percent all volunteer outfit, we do not make a single dime off anything we earn from this site, all funds are acquired for one reason only, to help out our Wounded Warriors. Thank you to our volunteers (forum helpers) on this site for all you do, your time is greatly appreciated!
January 9, 201115 yr  You don't need luck. If you can build a rocker (which you've demonstrated you can) you can build a plane. The only problem will be find the time to do it. Rich
January 9, 201115 yr Author I came in for a breather Rich, I almost got her done! Just gotta let the glue set up and then I'll be flattening the sole and the sides and the rest is down hill, hope I get some pics for you guys tonight. Richard McComas said: Â You don't need luck. January 9, 201115 yr I am about to turn in for the night, so I will have to wait till tomorrow for the pictures.
January 9, 201115 yr I think you could have modified it for low angle. The veritas is more expensive because it has a finer adjustment which makes it easier to use on hardwood because the cut is much finer. You also could have picked up one at an auction for a few bucks and cleaned it up.
January 9, 201115 yr Author Mike, surf on over to Ebay and let me know if you find a shoulder plane, I looked and looked, they aint gots one, they are mostly over 100 bucks, I was looking for an ol rust bucket stanley, but hockey sticks even those are 80 plus bucks. dragon1 said: I think you could have modified it for low angle.
