Baby Cradle Done

Featured Replies

Good evening;

Finished the baby cradle today for great grandson. I made one 2 years ago for my grandson and this one is for a gg son!

We're not old enough for this!

As always, it was a fun project and a learning experience. With temps in the 10's & 20's most of the time, I cut wood in the garage and moved to the basement for everything else.

WHoa!!!! Awesome Harry! Now that is a very nice cradle indeed. Maple?

Nice and clean, fine lines, excellent craftsmanship, and an heirloom for generations.

Great work Harry.

Nice, very nice. Mom and dad will appreciate a fine new piece of furniture in there home and probably show it off only after showing off the new baby.

I also love these guessing games on species of woods used. Yours is a real tough one, but it sure looks like hickory to me.

Wow, Harry that is one awesome cradle. Great craftsmanship. I love all of the detail. The through pegs in the end give it a nice touch.

So now give us a little more detail. What wood did you use?

What finish did you put on?

It all looks great!!

Good Morning.

Thanks for the positive feed back.

The wood is ash with satin wipe on poly. The plans for it came from WOOD Magazine and the end panels were already glued up. Didn't have the time or the warm temps to do that part. Next one I'll try that.

Again, thanks!! Smile.gif

Thanks for the update Harry.

One more question.

How did you do the slats, are they individual mortised and tenons?

The slats are 1/4 thick glued into a 1/4 dado in each rail with spacers  between each slat.

Thanks for all the kind words. With 3 more grand kids in this family, it should good a lot of use.

I'll post other pics of this in the next week or two. My wife is driving down to southern Calif. next weekend to deliver it to our grand daughter for the baby shower. So she'll do that and get away from our 0 degree weather for a few weeks.

Thanks again
