January 28, 201115 yr It is a cool evening here and and I'm stoking the fireplace to keep warm with some doug fir.Conservatively at 45 rings to the inch and a tree diameter inside the bark of 6 feet the wood calcs out at a little over 1000 years old .This wood burns well with no soot or smoke and heats for hours with just a small piece at a time in the little stove . After a long day in the shop , a very nice glow to end the evening and reflect on the time that passed before this tree .
January 28, 201115 yr Oh Geez, you sure know how to yank Woodworkers chains don't ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm calling your bluff!!!! Maybe you have a FEW little scraps but you aren't burning anything useful!!!! LOL.
January 28, 201115 yr Rob, your a true romantic at heart. That's amazing, to think that a tree was on this earth for a thousand years. If only that tree could talk. It's kind of fitting, that a part of it is being used to keep a man warm at night. To think of how many men might have leaned up against it, used it for shade, and now it to the end, it is still serving man. What other plans do you have for the rest of it Rob.
January 28, 201115 yr Dragon 1 is right , the gross majority is put to good use . From this group of logs slabs were produced ,as well as doors , floors ,wall panel, windows, box beams , pool gates ,base , trim , etc here in my shop . Most of the slabs go to high end furniture makers all over the west coast .Just a couple more pics of the raw timber.
January 28, 201115 yr Kevin , This wood comes from two sources at high altitude in the mountains of Southern California .
