January 30, 201115 yr A friend of mine and member of this forum (David Wright) came to my shop today (first time) because he wanted to learn how to make Caberiol legs. David is fairly new at woodworking and did a very good job at making his first leg. I made two blanks, one for me and one for him. I showed him one step and then had David do the same to his blank until we were done. He made a very nice leg as you'll see in the final picture. It just goes to show you, Hands on instructions can cut the learning curve way down.  Yes, this is his very first leg. And on top of that he's a Ham! Â
January 30, 201115 yr Good Morning Richard,Yes, hands on is the best teacher of all for one can explain till he/she is blue in the face but, nothing beats the hands on method of teaching/learning.Demonstrating first to show how it is done and then allow the student or apprentice to try it and as we all can see he did a great job and listened to what you said. Some people hear but don't listen.Good job by both you and him. Ralph
February 2, 201115 yr  Thank you everyone. I can see the flaws but I am happy with this first one,Rich is a great teacher, heck of alot of patience and good to have him as a friend.PS....... just glad I wore clean shorts ...think that was the trick!Â
February 2, 201115 yr David that is a great looking leg. Awesome job! Â The teacher wasn't bad either. Â Now I am jealous. I want to come to Palin's Alaska, take a lesson in that fabulous shop of Rich's and see if I can make a leg and not break one.
February 3, 201115 yr It is so great to see share their knowledge time and skills. I agree that hands on is a great teacher. And this is shown in your photos and the results of David's leg.
