My name is Rick Herrell and I live in Pilot Mountain,NC, that's the town next to Mayberry (Mt. Airy) where Andy Griffith grew up. He called it Mt. Pilot on the show.

I got here after doing a search for Hal Taylor rockers because I wanted to research the building of the chair. I have mine about half way done now and it's been a real adventure. I'm disabled from an accident at work and I need crutches to walk  so making something this big is a real challenge. I'm a metal worker by trade but after my accident I had to find something small that I could do to keep me from going CRAZY watching TV all day. I took up penturning and got quite good at it, in fact I'm a member of the Pen Makers Guild which is a pretty elite group of penturners. I kinda got bored after abot 300 pens so I decided to do something a little more challenging, and BOY did I find it!

I have a bunch of photos but this being my first post I don't know how I'll do but I'll try and upload a few.

I have a bunch more but I don't know the rules so here's three for now.

Take care and I'll be seeing you!!ning-sandingem-49867-74.jpgning-headrestinstalled001em-49867-49.jpgning-backlegglueup2em-49867-64.jpg

Welcome Rick!

I have friends in Stokes county so I am familiar with your area of the country.  I am a aspiring pen maker.  Nothing guild quality yet but I keep practicing.  Your rocker build looks great.  I have never made one myself but have admired John Courtland's builds.

Again welcome.

Hey Rick that is a great start on that rocker. John Morris will be happy to have another rocker builder here.

I am also noticing a very nice and clean shop in the background of those pictures. We love to see the pictures so post away.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Now we are talking Rick! What a great project you've undertaken. The Hal Taylor build is great, and Hal is a great guy too. You can't beat his plans and support. I am reeeeeaaallly happy to see another aspiring rocker builder here on The American Woodworker. I look forward to seeing more progress reports.

Oh by the way, you were worried about too many pics of your project, are you kidding! The more the better! As a matter of fact, your more then welcome to blog to your hearts content as well. If you need help starting a blog on your wonderful chair, just give me a hollar.

Great to have you aboard Rick, and happy rocker building! That one your doing now is sweet, and your doing a hockey sticks of a job.

Welcome Rick

Nice pics, love the rocker what a great job you are doing on it. Maybe some day I will attempt to build one for the Mrs. Right now she has too many other projects for me. Plus the other projects I have going already for customers.  Welcome to the site and please feel free to jump in the forums
