February 16, 201115 yr I turned this Beech wood bowl some time last year, Turned it green and put is aside to dry and almost forgot about it. Took it down and chucked it up and finished it out. It has a couple of coats of BLO rubbed in. I turned this using a 1/2" Doug Thompson bowl gouge then came back to see how it would do on the cleanup and wow does that gouge hold and edge and cut good. I also picked up one of the Easy Tool, the finisher and ran it along the bottom of the bowl and I was amazed at how well it smoothed out the bottom and the transition to the side. Â I left the bottom a little larger and flatter, but I don't think I will do that on the next bowl. I just don't like the look. It sits level. Â Thanks Â
February 16, 201115 yr John...........I'm kinda scanning and admiring a few of these turnings that you folks are doing and it's getting me to think'n about a lathe. Years ago I had a craftsman 36" lathe and did a quite a bit of turning. This past weekend I had a small spindle turning to do for a freind. I used another friends BIG jet lathe..............and I had a blast. This friend has been trying to talk me into buying a lathe and I've been fighting it. Now..........I'm seeing the possiblities. Dag-nab-it!!! That's all I need is another big tool in my shop!!!
February 16, 201115 yr Author It's one of those things when you get to doing it Gary, it just bites you bad. I call it my instant gratification tool. When it seems I just can't get anything finished, I can chuck up a piece of wood and make something and feel like I accomplished something. Get hooked up with one and let's do some turning.
February 16, 201115 yr looks good John just wondring tho... I've heard of beach balls but not beach bowls before
February 16, 201115 yr Author  John I thought about that when I put the title on it. Maybe I should have colored it like a beach ball.
February 17, 201115 yr Nice beech ball I mean bowl! I see you used the EWT finisher to clean up the bottom. I got a mini rougher and finisher for Christmas. I am not sold on the rougher yet but I love the finisher. Craig Jackson was at out club in January. I had basketball and couldn't go. He did send me a DVD when I e-mailed a question to him. Â
February 17, 201115 yr Ok..........I can't help myself. I gotta respond. We have a small town here in north dakota, right on the western border. It is Beach North Dakota and the young men that live in that community refer to themselves as............................sons of beach. Oh well............I thought it was funny.
February 17, 201115 yr Author Greg, I have a friend that purchased the whole set. I haven't seen him turn with them yet, but he tells me he really likes the rougher but was having trouble with the finisher. I think he may have been trying to take too much with the finisher. It really only requires a very light touch and keep it level. When does your club meet and do they meet in Jackson? If it is on the weekend, I would like to try to come up sometime. It is only a couple of hours for me. I talked to Craig at the Tennessee Woodturning Symposium. He was demoing the tools there. That is where I picked up the finisher. Greg Coleman said:Nice beech ball I mean bowl! Â

February 17, 201115 yr John,West Tennessee Woodturners meet the 2nd Saturday of each month in Jackson. The meeting starts at 0930. The next meeting is March 12th. The demonstration is hollowing. I hope I can increase my attendance. Unfortunately, softball is beginning but we don't usually practice or play on Saturdays.
March 16, 201115 yr Author That is a fact Charles. I couldn't decide if I wanted to bring in the sides and give it some type of base, but I went with the flat bottom and concave in the center. Â Thanks for the compliments. Get you a chuck and jump in on the bowl turning. Charles Nicholls said: Nice Bowl though, one of these days I'll have to get me a proper faceplate to work bowls with and give it a shot. As for the bottom being flat, at least it doesn't roll over
