February 17, 201115 yr Hopefully this pen will open some doors for me. I was asked to turn some pens for the local college bookstore. I couldn't match the colors with a commercial blank so a member over at IAP cast some custom colors for me. Here is the result. Custom blank on a TI gold euro, sanded to 600 grit followed to 12,000 MM, a white diamond buff and Ren wax. This is a slim line turned in Rus Fairfield's "Fat Line" style. The wood is cedar. The plating is gunmetal. The finish is CA/BLO William Young style. This pen is entered in the IAP Russ Fairfield challenge.
February 17, 201115 yr Those are two very nice pens Greg. I like the custom colors. How it works out and you get lots of orders for that one. Best of luck with the other also. That cedar looks very fine. I have turned a few cedar ones and some of them turned out pretty good and a couple of them were so soft it would chip our some. That one looks awesome. Best of luck on it.
April 2, 201115 yr Whoa!!! Character! On the wood one, tons of character, great job Greg! The composite one is nice too, but man I sure do love those wood pens, specially that one.
April 2, 201115 yr Author Thanks for the kudos John, Robert, and Joshua. Robert I use Woodturningz often. The guy that makes my blanks does it from home and researches colors for me. I like the idea of the year bands for the euros. I may have to give that a try. The ones I have made so far are for sale in the college book store. I may have to go to a higher end kit. I have been told I am selling to low.
