QUESTION - PUTTY ??

Featured Replies

Any body knows name of putty that will actually blends or match the stain?  I'm not sure but I seems to remember Ralph may have found one about a year or so ago.  I thought I had it written down but can't find it.  Did a sample on staining a scrape white oak with several putty I had and they are showing thru like a sore thumb. Yea I made an oops on the bookcase.  But then it been awhile since done made something like this.  Would appreciate any help.

thanks

What color stain are you using?

How big is the hole?

Got any pics?

Good Morning Wayne,

The wood filler I use is call Timber Mate that can be bought at Woodcraft stores or over the internet. I use it all the time for it will accept stain very well and once stained and finished you can hardly tell where it is. I now buy it by the quart and every so often I simply put a few drops of water on the top and close the lid and it all stays nice and soft. No mixing or fuss but don't use a metal putty knife for it turns the wood black and is hard to get out.

The stain my son wanted is Natural  made buy MinWax.  It really nothing more of a clear stain but it does seems to tint the white oak to a slightly reddish brown.  The only place I really needed to use the putty was just under the top and at back inside corner of the bookcase where I did a rabbit cut for the top with the router.  What happens was the clamps that I had in holding an straight edge for the router slips at one end and the bit dug in little more than i wanted.  You would hadve to look in under and upside down to see it.  Did 2 coats of stain and think that may be it. Am planing on applying at least 3 coats of lacquer may do 4 coats but will see how 3 looks.  But it be thursday before I can get back to it.  Will get some pics on it.  Thanks for the name of the putty. I'll see if I can get some try it.

I thought it was Timber something but could not remember for sure or where to find it.   Think I will get some.  Can you use a plastic putty knife?  Think I have one but maybe little wide which I maybe able to trim it down.

thanks
