A Really Neat Grinder

Featured Replies

A buddy of mine at work gave me his fathers old grinder. His dad passed away from cancer a couple years ago, very sad.

This past weekend he and his mother cleared out the garage and found a few things he thought I would like. This is a slow speed grinder, it runs well and has great looks and character. I love it. And I hope his father is smiling down on the renewed interest of his old grinder that sharpened many a gardening tool. And now I will use it for my chisels. It even has a water trough!

Is that an antique?? In perfect condition. Whow. And a 1725rpm ta boot. Lucky you.

Are you sure that's a slow speed grinder?  Check out the RPM and google up the speeds.

I ask cause the right wheel has aluminum in it and the grits for the wheels don't look fine enough or wide enough.

I have 2 slow speed grinders and 1 high speed grinder.  The slow speeds usually have a white wheel and a grey wheel.

Also, your gonna need to find the tool rests for it (might be able to get them from Sears) which wouldn't (probably) have been taken off a slow speed grinder.

Take a look around for them.

And don't forget to do some googling to find a good set of wheels if it is a slow speed grinder.

Hate to be the Harbinger of Doom but I'd hate to see you blue out a plane blade on the wrong speed and grit.

It is a 3450 upon closer inspection. It sure looked like it was goin slow when I fired it up. But that was because it took awhile to get up to full speed. The RPM was faded and illegible on the label, I did a Google search with the model number and the specs do show it as 3450 ripims.

Under the premise that is was a slow speed grinder, I wasn't concerned about the wheels, I would have changed them out, I just thought the ol fella that had it before me might have installed these wheels over the needed wider wheels.

But it is a high speed grinder. Not suitable for chisels or plane blades, but I will hold on to it. I just love the way it looks to much.
