February 28, 201115 yr Well started a good "cabinet" to store all those battery op tools I have located all over the place. I spent three days playing with it on paper THIS week and several days last week measuring and mulling it over in my head - I DID notice something bouncing around in there but wasn't sure what it coulb be because of the echo. The problem is I have 5 batt. drills, 2 saws, a hand vac, and a few other minor tools. EACH has its associated charger AND a small collection of spare batteries. I WAS going to incorperate spaces for a few of the corded tools but THAT idea changed. I'll do seperate storage boxes for air tools AND electric tools.Anyway, the cabinet was 2/3 done when I decided I NEED to head a different direction. So NOW I'll sort of finish the work-in-progress then make the modifications I need to before heading in a slightly different direction. It's a good thing I bought a whole sheet of 1/2" BC and I have PLENTY of 1/4" scraps.Back to the drawing board and shop.Of course this means another day of CLEANING and finding my work bench again. I'll get photos when its DONE.Hmmm WHY did I through away that fan pedistal?
February 28, 201115 yr  Maybe some drawers, with dividers in them, for the smaller stuff?  You might look into adding a power strip inside the cabinet, for the chargers to get happy with. Instead of a label on the front, carve a name .   That way, with a glance, you can tell WHAT you've stashed in thar.
March 1, 201115 yr Sounds like a case of vapor lock John. I get it often when making something that has to be compartmentalized for tools or hardware, the problem is there is just so much, so many dimensions, so many tools and configurations, it really is overwhelming. Been there, it can be quite the daunting experience. For that reason I have put off building a wall tool chest, the kind with fold out doors. Just the thought of making a place for every tool, is overwhelming, as a matter of fact, I am breaking out in a cold sweat just talking about it.Good luck partner
March 1, 201115 yr I actually used to use the end of a bench with holes drilled in a piece of scrap to hold the drills and a scrap of wood hung the chargers (3 of them on the wall (I could take them off and with me if I wanted) and a tray shelf for the batteries.
March 1, 201115 yr Well I envy you. I need to do that, just can't find the time to stop the other projects to get organized. I did put together a little box shelf the other day to put some magazines in. I put it up over the door in the shop. All of the battery tools do present a problem and since most of them are the same it is hard to keep up with all of the chargers and batteries. Best of luck with it and let us see it when you get done, it might inspire some of us to build one.Â
March 1, 201115 yr Author Well I am finishing THIS iteration of the "box" so I can get it off the "to do" list. I AM going to add a power bar to plug in all the chargers AND a couple of 1 1/2" pvc pipe-cups to hold bits and blades (jig saw) AND a few 2" pcv pipes to hold some of the batteries. TOO MANY batteries to set ON the cabinet. The next version will likely be a pedistal type tower with castors. I noticed that most of the tools were either 3 1/2" or 4" wide and MOST of the tools are either 8" or 10" tall. This information accomodates small modular boxes stacked inside a column like a giant puzzle. Only a few tools are deeper than 10", for instance the circular saw and hand-held vac bot need about 14" to accomodate depth but only 8" or so if stored on sideways. This is a puzzle I can tackle but it can't EVER be a "final product". It will HAVE TO BE a "good enough" product.
