March 12, 201115 yr This is part of what I had/have on my bench this weekend. I started a small walnut box and this is/was suppose to be the base. All mortise an tenon and a good fit all around. I had all the profiling and sanding done and I even had it glued up. I sitting at my bench while glueing and clamping. I went to step away for something...............and a flip'n pocket on my apron snagged the handle of one of thbe clamps. This is the result. I'm hoping I can salvage what you those legs. The legs are koa and I did not wash ( lacquer thinner ) them prior to gluing...........I hope they hold.
March 12, 201115 yr Arrrrghh!!!! Gary, that same exact thing has happened to me, cept I dragged a project off the bench with a sander cord. It's a bummer man. Kind of makes ya wanna just flip the whole dang thing across the shop don't it? How many major expletives exited your mouth?
March 12, 201115 yr Author John...........I gotta be honest here. All I said was "darn".............and I said it quit loud.John Morris said: Arrrrghh!!!! March 13, 201115 yr I hope you can salvage the project, it looks to be a great looking base. Just curious why did you have the top of the tenon flush with the top of the base leg. Wouldn't the mortise's have been stronger had they not been connected and open on the top of the leg? I'm not criticizing but asking for my own knowledge.
March 13, 201115 yr I know you didn't say "opps". I don't know how you contained yourself to one expletive. I would have use at least 10 and gone to the house for a long break.
March 13, 201115 yr Author John...this whole box project has been a seat of the pants project. I had an idea as to the what I wanted to do with the box, but no a foggy idea as to how to bring a top and bottom/base into the plan..........and make them blend together. Yes, your right, but with the idea I had...........and what I did............those legs are to small to route mortises the way you suggest.....and do it safely. It's just a small box and they just ain't suppose to be abused. But life and circumstances forgot I was involved. If I don't throw the whole thing in the trash.................you'll all probly get a chuckle when I post the finished box.  John Michael Dillen said:I hope you can salvage the project, it looks to be a great looking base. Just curious why did you have the top of the tenon flush with the top of the base leg. March 13, 201115 yr Author Richard............I use to work in the oil fields.................and I used'm all back then. I still have a temper............it just about came to the forfront............which would have been the sledge hammer!!!!. March 13, 201115 yr Author Also to help bring the size into perspectivre.......those rails and stiles (aprons) are 3/8" x 1-1/16" and the legs are 7/8" square. Can't remember the length............but somewhere between 1-1/2 and 1-3/4 long
March 13, 201115 yr Wow, Gary, sorry about that one. You did good holding it to one. Now you don't have to make a big contribution to the jar. Man, I hope you can salvage that. I looked like it was going to be very nice.
March 13, 201115 yr Author I went out to my shop last evening and glued and clamped my "opps's", and I just came in a few minutes ago.....and it seems I got the job salvaged. Or at least at this time it looks that way. I have the whole base glued up now......and I kept my fat body a long way away from the clamps. It's resting comfortably...............drying. I'll see tomorrow if I did good. Can I say it here???? darn, I hate them kinda screwups!!!!John Moody said:Wow, Gary, sorry about that one. You did good holding it to one.
