March 16, 201115 yr This is my first end grain cutting board. I've wanted to make one of these since I saw it on the Wood Wisperer. It's made from purpleheat and hard maple. The dimensions are 21"x12"x1.25". It was a lot of fun and I was able to test my jet drum sander. The sander worked out great. There is a mistake that will be corrected on my next board. While rounding over the edges on one corner the router tipped slightly and gouged the edge. This wouldn't happen had I done the routing on a router table. Oh my!  I guess I'll have to build a router table which is a good idea concidering I just bought a new Triton 3.25 router. Thanks for viewing.
March 16, 201115 yr Great cutting board John. I know what you mean about the dip. I do all of mine with a hand router. Have to take it easy especially at the corners. How did the purpleheart do in the drum sander. If you take too much it is pretty easy to burn. That looks really good. Did you do multiple glue ups or do it all in one glue up?
March 17, 201115 yr Author John the drum sander worked great with the purpleheart. I took my time sanding and only made incrimental changes to the drum height and I ran the board through at least 4 times before changing height, I mostly listened to the sound which told me when to adjust. I used my new ROS for the final sanding prior to applying the finish I used the multiple glue up method. The board is smooth as glass.
March 18, 201115 yr Author Thanks Jim! There are a few mistakes that I will correct in the future.Lewis I finished it using the technique the Woodwisperer demonstrates in his video. Its a 50/50 solution of General Finishes brand Salad Bowl Finish and Mineral Spirits. About 4 applications alloing 12 hrs between coats on boath sides then a light hand sanding with 000 steelwool, then allow board to sit for 72 hours before using.
