March 16, 201115 yr That has got to be one of the most figured and beautiful woods I've ever seen. I'm drooling right now!

March 17, 201115 yr Please, please, please..........tell me you know how to hold that beautiful color.I had a box elder slab/clock given to me several yrs ago and it never seen sunlight, just daylight............and the colors faded. I'm still sick. It was sooooo bright.
March 17, 201115 yr Author No, not mine. While it's very beautiful wood I understand it not good of much except turning. I also read it doesn't hold it color. John Moody said: That is some beautiful book matched slabs. Are those yours Rich?
March 17, 201115 yr Author Sorry, but from what I read it doesn't' hold it color and that a real shame. March 17, 201115 yr I don't see a single box elder bug in the photos; by the way THAT is the best way to treat box elder BUGS, cut the trees down. Softer than silver maple and prone to warping and twisting, its not even good for firewood. Too bad we have so many in western WI.Oh, they DO have a + as a member of the maple family you CAN get some sap from them for syrup however the yield is not as rich as any other maple.
March 17, 201115 yr That is a pretty slab. even tho it will lose it's color the grain pattern is nice and could be used as a veneer. As for cutting down box elders te only problem is that they sprout from nearly every root then and become even bigger nusance.
March 18, 201115 yr I'm going to be that guy here for a moment...I have turned a flame box elder bowl. The little amount of red color that runs through it, is as bright as when I turned it. Now its been almost 2 or 3 years since I turned it, so will see what a few more years will do, stay tuned I did spray the bowl with a little amber Transtint/lacquer thinner dye and if I remember correctly, oiled it with General Finishes Seal-A-Cell then shot it with shellac, then a top-coat of General Finishes water-based High Performance.  -Ace-     Â
