March 16, 201115 yr I've built several cribbage boards and I'm looking for a slot cutter to cut the slot for the metal or wood slide that covers the peg storage cavity on the underside of the board (pic is example of what I'm trying to accomplish). I've yet to find one narrow enough. the cutter needs to be 3/4" dia and 1/16" thick. Thanks for any help you folks have.
March 17, 201115 yr John, I am looking and for the life of me, I can't find it. But I'm still looking!
March 17, 201115 yr Rockler has them here but 1/16th thick slot is way too thin. http://www.rockler.com/c/slot-cutters.cfm
March 17, 201115 yr That's the problem I had last night while doing a search for John Dillen, too thick. The best I could do was 3/16ths. dragon1 said: Rockler has them here but 1/16th thick slot is way too thin. Â http://www.rockler.com/c/slot-cutters.cfm
March 17, 201115 yr Google custom made router bits and you will find a few places that will make router bits to your specs. I'm just gonna make a guess that your bit will be expensive for a one of a kind.
March 17, 201115 yr Woodworkers Tool Works here in Wisconsin will make up any bit you need. No inexpensive, but made in the USA. Tell Bobby I sent you.http://woodworkerstoolworks.com/Â Great folks there. bob
March 17, 201115 yr I'll put them in our "American Made Tools" resources page Bob. Thanks for the link. Bob Kloes said: Woodworkers Tool Works here in Wisconsin will make up any bit you need. March 17, 201115 yr Sorry John, here's what your looking for http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_slot.html
March 17, 201115 yr Still won't do Mike, look closely at what he's trying to accomplish. And the one cutter they do have that will accomplish his task, the cutter is to thick. dragon1 said: Sorry John, here's what your looking for  http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pag...
March 17, 201115 yr Sorry, I posted the wrong one. Here's the right one http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_slot.html#Anchorslottop
March 17, 201115 yr He might be able to use that one, but again, the cutter height is too much, he needs a 1/16th, those are 1/8th and he needs a 3/4" dia. dragon1 said: Sorry, I posted the wrong one. Here's the right one  http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pag...
March 17, 201115 yr The stack-able one at the bottom has a 1/16" cutter. Can you just put the one on the shaft or do you have to stack them?
March 17, 201115 yr I hate to be the difficult one here, but the problem with the arbor cutters John is that the threaded end where the nut secures the cutter will be in the way of the cut he needs to make. John Moody said: The stack-able one at the bottom has a 1/16" cutter. Can you just put the one on the shaft or do you have to stack them?
March 17, 201115 yr That's the closest your gonna come on that bit for a stock bit.A flat top screw will help you get to almost zero clearance but not completely. The bit that is used for those is actually a 3 step process 1) straight bit to cut groove to allow for slotted cutter to pass 2) slotted cutter with cutter WELDED to the shaft and no screw. 3) Plunge router bit to route trough. If you use a bit like the one I put up you may need to have a dimple put in on the first pass with a round nose bit then finish out with straight bit, slot bit, then plunge bit. And John, a 1/16th slot would be too thin and prone to breakage of the cover piece being slid in.
March 17, 201115 yr I'd bet ya a buck to a donut hole that it is a 3 step process. Just guessing now, but with a plunge or otherwise able to change bit depth easily and with a fence.............a 3/4" straight bit set roughly 3/8" deep...........route the initial groove. Readjust bit depth and rout a short pocket deep enough to hold the pegs. Then a special made slot cutter to cut 1/16", enough to secure a piece of slightly bent springy metal that secures the pegs for storage.Hope all that makes sense.
March 17, 201115 yr hockey sticks fire...........I just seen mikes reply..........and we are almost word for word.
March 18, 201115 yr Author Thanks folks for all of your help and links. The closest I think I can get to the dimensions is a bit from Frued. It's a bit thicker than I'd like but I think I can get it milled down to the correct thickness. I have thought of using Dremal tool and a small saw blade but I will have to experiment with that setup, I'm not sure I'll have the control like I would with a router table and fence setup. Thanks all!
March 18, 201115 yr Well after banging my head all night I remembered this bit from Dremel http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Tools/Pages/ToolDetail.aspx?pid=198 It is what you want and with cutting the first groove the groove for the first part of the compartment this bit would give you a small groove in the edge for those channels you want. And it IS flat bottomed.
March 18, 201115 yr Or grind this one down     http://www.dremel.com/en-us/AttachmentsAndAccessories/Pages/AttachmentsDetail.aspx?pid=655
