Hello all.

 

My name is Daniel Warner. I'm 28 years old and currently live and work in Lafayette, IN. My home town that I still have a shop in is Tell City, 4 hours South of here. I've been woodworking since the age of 12, got serious about it at 15 and it pretty much took over at age 18. I pushed a broom in the Tell City Chair Co. during summers in high school. I've done custom work for hire. Worked in a furniture factory (William Tell Woodcrafters/Swiss Plywood) in the rough mill and machine room. and most recently have worked as lab manager for the Wood Research Lab at Purdue University (almost 7 years now).

 

The Job at the wood lab has been everything, writing and teaching safety and machine operation, CAD/CAM and CNC router intstruction, wood science and mechanics, everything related to moisture, getting into consulting for some of the big companies in Indiana, help with lumber log and tree short courses, heck I even ran a medical scanner in a sawmill for a summer. We scanned whole logs so a software we were developing could map out cut patterns for grade hardwood lumber an beat the sawyer. I get a lot of industrial strength woodworking exposure. I also do a lot of Wood ID.

 

I've also owned and ran my own sawmill (Woodmizer LT40 hydraulic) for about 7 years. I've cut all kinds of stuff from cottonwood to Osage-orange. My favorite is quartering sycamore.

 

My shop at home is all big old American iron. Nearly 80 tons of it. The biggest machine I have is an American Wood Working Machinery Co. 54" resaw. It's nearly 10 feet tall (and goes 2 feet through the floor for the bottom wheel) and weighs about 4 tons. The bottom whell is a ton alone. My machines are definitely of the old flatbelt era. The oldest is probably my 1880's S A Woods Moulder.

 

I am a big historian on old wood working machinery. If any one has a machine from American Wood Working Machinery I would be very interested in gettting some info from you.  

 

My furniture style always comes out being very modern. I do like to use crotches and natural edges. Wood is beautiful and I don't need to do much to augment it.

 

I'll be around. I can definitely add to any discussions of a technical nature, especially regarding wood mechanics, machining, ID, and drying/moisture issues.

Dan my friend I am sure glad you took old man Wyatt's advice and signed up on this site as I think you will like it.............

 

I have known Dan for several years and I can say that I don't think that I have ever known a person as young as Dan who is as well versed and extremely knowledgeable regarding several subject matters that are shop related. He is a Dynamo........as they used to say. He has been known on occasion to party very hard and is a typical bachelor, but that will probably wear off when the right gal comes along.

 

I hope in the near future to visit Dan's shop and Wood Research Lab at Purdue University as he is acquiring a bunch of neat and very old machinery. 

 

The older Dan ~ now thinkin that this Dan may qualify for the Younger Dan now and the former Younger Dan will have to be now referred to as the retired Dan, St. Louis Dan, or some such handle..........

As already stated there are a lot of Dans around here however I enjoyed your resume and look forward to maybe meeting you some day for we two are like apples who don't fall from the tree.

Welcome aboard and please do post some pictures. As far as old tools I have the same Walker Turner Band Saw that my dad use when he was 35 years of age and it is still going strong.

Looks like I'm gonna have to take a trip due west on Indiana 26 to visit Dan's operation.  Welcome again Dan.
