March 28, 201115 yr I don't normally get calls like this. I buy most of my figured wood from a few small mills. They normally set aside stock they saw and call me when they get 1000' or so. I then have to buy the whole works to get a good price and help the mill move stock. Last friday, I got a call from a mill I have bought from before. I thought he might have a load to look at. He said he was calling because they just sawed a log and he thought I might want to take a look. So today i took a nice drive and went to see what he had. The pictures I took don't do this justice. It was the thickest curliest hard maple I ever saw. One tree, not huge, but nice. One board is 18" wide and there are some 16" wide pieces also. It is wet and frozen, but I have it on sticks right now and will be taking to the kiln tomorrow. Got about 100 board feet out of the tree. It was tapped for maple syrup years ago. It has the tap holes to prove it. It has a little dark streaks by the holes. But it is the heaviest curl I have seen in a long time. All nice and white for the most part. Sometimes , this lumber stuff is really nice. It pays to build good relationship with mills and loggers. Treat them with respect and it all comes back to you. I can't wait to get this stuff dry and run a piece through the planer.
March 29, 201115 yr Nice gloat Bob... will any of that be for sale or remain in the private stock? -Ace-
March 29, 201115 yr Nice pickup Bob. That is some nice maple. Like the others, is this going in the personal stock or will it be offered up? Â
March 29, 201115 yr Author Well, its funny you ask. I have several thousand feet of curly maple sitting here along with lots of other stuff. I could see a set of end tables, hall table and a coffee table all being made form this. I just need to find the right customer. Or maybe a desk or stepback cupboard. I would like to see it all used in 1 project. If I build it or sell the set, really does not matter. It will not be cheap. It has some very great potential. Does any of that answer your question? Geez, I ramble on a lot. bob
